I'm gonna start with Planetside 2.

No matter how long the grind is in the game (it's long), you can't help but be amazed at the scope of the thing, especially when you're NC and you're assaulting the purple guys at night. So, even if I'm a low level player with little certification points, I'm still having a blast and all of a sudden, boom a hundred cert points! That's the kind of grind that's fun, because you just play the game, have a blast, and you're rewarded.

DoTA 2 is also fun, because there is practically no grind at all. The game just makes you want to buy stuff by selling you stuff that's simply enhancing your experience without giving you any power!

War Thunder is okay-ish. It does feel a little more "grindy" (?), but you have to blame Wargaming for setting the trend of infinite, unpleasant grind.

and yeah, WoT sets the bar for worst grind ever <_<

World of Warcraft. You may be grinding through levels, but there is a story the whole way.

Even the grind in SW:TOR was long but full of content. Well, until you got to the end. <_<

Grind in itself is not fun. The games you've mentioned just make it bearable, but it is not the grind itself that is fun. <_<

The term "Grind" is thrown around way too much these days, it's getting to the point where it seems like 95% of the people using it don't really understand what it actually means... Well either that, or I just don't agree with how the word has been re-defined.

There used to be a time where you'd start a game, and leveling up your character from the beginning was considered "Playing the Game", but for some reason it's called "The Grind" now-a-days. Does this not infer that people just want to get to "end game" content as soon as they launch the game? It just doesn't make sense to me.

It appears "game progression" and "challenging game-play" have been replaced with "grind"...

I blame consoles...

If you can't load it, launch it, and master it on your first try... it's a "grind".

I actually heard my kid once complain that he had to read the instructions on the jewel case insert to figure out how to do something in the game... <_<

I fondly remember reading the 300 page game-manual for Falcon 4.0 and enjoying it.

Man times have changed. :)

who else manually entered targetting solutions in Silent Hunter III?

Man, getting sinking that tanker all by yourself made you feel like a genius.

And talking of Falcon 4.0, who else played the old Jane's Simulation games?

I remember F-15 being my favorite.

Whatever happened to the fun thick game manuals that were packed with info? Are games only made for ADD kids these days? :D

The gaming industry as a whole seems to suck compared to the 90's. Thank GOD my older brother had a Super Nintendo and a Sega for me to play on when I was 8, otherwise I might have grown up to be one of those ***** CoD addicts.
(I like CoD but *** ****** everyone obsesses over it. It's ridiculous. Plus nobody makes Unreal Tournament or Quake style shooters anymore.)

AAA games, yes. The prices for development increased and the logical conclusion is to broaden the audience as much as possible to make sure you don't go broke (and the fact even then it doesn't work out all the time tells a lot).

As far as arena shooters go, there are a few that are made, but in general, people don't play them anymore. The pros stick to Quake 3 and the rest handful of people are stuck in minimal communities playing XY game that almost no one knows about. With things like the CoD-ification of Tribes with Tribes:Ascend, there's not much of a future for the genre in the immediate future unless something forces the community to move on from Q3 and demand a new, but good (not UT3/T:A kind of deal) game.

Guild wars 2, Warframe and Dead island come to mind. oh skyrim as well, whenever that gets stale just shove a couple atmosphere mods in.

I cut my proverbial "PC-gamer" teeth on all those deep simulations... I did them all, Dynamix, Janes, Microprose, EA Spectrum Holobyte...

Juicy thick manuals (and code wheels) and game play you had to "learn" to be proficient... sigh. :P Miss those days.

Cause and effect I surmise: Consoles, energy drinks and ADD diagnosis... That and the instillment of instant gratification and reward. :(

Oh and "yes" I did set my own targeting solutions in SH3... No sub Captain worth the salt would resign to the auto-solution option! :D
