The zoom you saw others using is a zoom module. GXP is needed to unlock it (under pilot trees, refer to konovig's pic) so you can equip and use it. Once you have it, press v to activate.
You might want to go options and look through the weapons grouping and change your mouse left/right button settings. By default the left mouse fires the selected weapons group, so if you highlight lrms and set as group 2, it fires on left click unless you highlight a different weapon.
