Hello everyone. About a week ago I started playing this game. So far I have been loving it. The only problem is that I can't decide what kind of mech to play. I bough a Light Mech and ended up hating it- so I sold it. At the moment I am leaning towards a longer ranged play style. I'm not a fan of brawling at all and although I like to stay at range I want to be dishing out some good damage. The assaults are cool but I would need a good loadout to be convinced to play one. I don't want to be a "Missile Boat", I would like to use Ballistic Weapons or Lasers.

My basic questions are: What is a good mech suited for long range combat? What are some good builds with that mech, or weapons in general, that would make for a feared long range fighter?

Any help/tips are appreciated ;)

I've decided to go with a Jagermech JM6-DD... I still don't know what to equip it with but I'll have to experiment with it until I find some pointers.

Run 2 AC5's and 2 AC2's with a standard engine, or 4 AC5's with an XL engine. Those are my personal favorites, and they can put out an impressive amount of damage.

Sniper builds have been nerfed over and over, and if you find one you like and make the game enjoyable as a PUG player...guess what? they will nerf it until you punch a kitten.

Ballistics, well there's Gauss Jager, Cataphract 4X

And if you like PPC, well you could give the Catapult K2 a go.

Just a few mechs off top of my head,

Sniper weapons have been the best in the game for months now.

I made a post about "snipers" you should check it out! ;)

Anyhow, if you are going to play a "sniper" please read the many posts about range shooting and damage after optimum range. Please note that shooting most weapons from a very long distance do little to no damage.

I like the Gauss Rifle best for that kind of work. The lack of a visually indentifiable flight path makes you that much harder to spot. Any other long-range weapon shows you to the enemy, even if you are not on their radar. Just be aware that you DPS will not be good enough for a serious brawl, so backup weapons are crucial.

TDR-5SS is nice, with the RT energy hardpoints high up (in line with the cockpit) - excellent for peeking over hills.

that's a big advantage, even with an auto canon if you shoot someone at range they have your location fairly well on the first torso sweep as they begin backing away especially if you fire a second volley.

and forget lasers for stealth.

often iv been nailed by one gauss and I torso sweep as I back away and see nothing I think iv taken cover but im wrong and wear another.

id definitely favour gauss for the job.

the question u need to ask urself is...do u wanna be a stationary or mobile sniper?

more mobility helps reduce detection risk, and allows for evasion when detected, thus a medium or heavy mech would be ok.

being stationary u need to pop in and around buildings and rely on armor to save you, so going heaviest possible works there.

ERLL work if u wanna draw enemies to your position for more kills, but could end up overwhelmed. also helps when needing to kill off light mechs coming to swarm.

Dual AC2/5 combo works nice at juggling enemy reticles and forcing them back.

ERPPC nice spike damage but not good at sustained DPS

Dual Gauss rifle requires skill but can take arms off enemy mechs in 2-3 clean shots.

Jagermech, Cataphract, Shadowhawk, Battlemaster, Highlander, and Atlas can all make solid snipers if built right.

What did you think while running it stock? I find that's the best way to go - play with it as is, and modify it in a way to suit what you think is wrong. Hate the UAC jam? Replace them. Too slow? Bigger engine.

Although for the record, CASE is worthless with XL engines. I'd take that off straight away, and use that ton for something else.

I don't plan on just sitting back and sniping. I meant that I was going to play at med-long range and support the brawlers with heavy hitting guns. I understand that weapons do next to nothing from ultra long range...

If you're playing a "DD" I would suggest 4 ac2's set them up in two firing groups, you can put in enough ammo to have a very long endurance, and yes I've used 400+ rounds in a match. I fire mine alternating, it keeps heat relatively low, giving you 30-45 seconds of fire time before you start worrying about overheat. not real useful without support tho :/

I've gone with the "S" model over the "DD" model.

You will want 2 other variants anyway if you find you like the chassis, to unlock all pilot skills. The expensive DD variant comes with the XL260 engine, which is useful for many ballistic builds on the Jagers.

I have been using the Cataphract 4x with dual Gauss Riffles and a Xl 255 engine. Hanging back with advanced zoom works great. Easily 300-500 damage per match. The only problem is when a attacked by light mechs.
