I think this article is fairly spot on. Especially with all of the delays with UI2.0 and CW, to throw out a "give us your money" announcement is just bad press.

Throwing out the art for the clan stuff? Cool. Throwing out some ideas for implementing clan stuff? Cool. Throwing out a sales package that looks like a huge money grab? Not cool.
