Thnx for the tips, I found the site and the box set, did not think it would be that cheap, warhammer cost a arm and leg for 5 space marine figures :)

You'll want to look for the Box Set, as it will come with maps and miniatures to play with, above and beyond the rules for play …

[coughs]

There's a … thing between them two games, with the GW fans caught in the middle. :)

You might want to look into Alpha-Strike.

It's a stream-lined version of the game. Regular BattleTech games can be quite long.

(Aside: While I'm not fond of the rules and gameplay for MechWarrior: Dark Age and -Age of Destruction, I do enjoy the larger scale much, much more.)

Welcome to the game of Battletech Epa. We can always use new players. :P

First off what part of the world are ya from? And ask around your gaming group, especially if there are any older players there, you'll be surprised there might be a few players around.

Second: Yes start with the boxed set. The minis quality is sorely lacking in the boxed set but http://www.ironwindmetals.com
has an awesome line of pewter minis for BT. Note this isn't like Warhammer where you need the exact mini, with the exact weapons to play any mini can stand in for anything else, even at tournaments.
If you enjoy what you see there move onto more advanced rules in the Total Warfare core rulebook etc.

Introductory Box Set reprint is due to release in January/Febuary, and it looks like minis quality is going to be lot better.

I made up a table top version of MWO.

If you roll a 6, your PPCs/ACs obliterate the other mech. Then you miss a turn. Because.
If you roll a 5, you overheat for some unknown reason.
Roll a 4, you are TK'd or lose because of PUG/Noobz/Drunk/Bug/Etc (You get to choose. RPG element! It seems so reeeel!)
Rolling 1 through 3 gets you disconnected.

Its F2P, so enjoy. Gold dice cost $500.

According to this blog post by Randall N. Bills from CGL, new box set should start shipping to their warhouse in January - so I guess it'll hit reatail sometime in Febuary. Try checking out their website for street date - they'll probably publish it next month.

You can preorder it in various places, for example - here.

BattleTech is the Table Top Game.

Quote

Total Warfare is the single-source rulebook for people who play Classic BattleTech. It is not intended to teach new players the game, but rather to serve as a reference work for people who know the game, while introducing more technologies and expansive rules than appear in the basic box set. The introductory game in the BattleTech line is the Classic BattleTech Introductory Box Set. New players should pick up that product before diving into this one.

Construction rules for the various units presented in Total Warfare can be found in Classic BattleTech TechManual.

MechWarrior in the Table Top RPG Game.

Quote

A Time of War is the fourth iteration of the Role Playing Game for BattleTech, previously known as the "MechWarrior" series. It is therefore informally also known as MechWarrior, Fourth Edition. However, the name "MechWarrior" had been abandoned for the RPG series to avoid confusion with the new MechWarrior: Dark Age brand and game line; the 2007 FanPro reprint of the 1999 MechWarrior, Third Edition was renamed to Classic BattleTech RPG. "A Time of War" had previously been the title of the introduction chapter in the third edition. “ A Time of War is the fifth volume in the core BattleTech rulebook line and is completely compatible with any level of BattleTech boardgame play. Players can literally move from an RPG experience to the boardgame and back again if that’s the style of play they wish to use.

The Classic BattleTech Introductory Box Set is the core set for the beginning Classic BattleTech gamer/collector. It has all of the official products necessary to play the tabletop game.

Well they're suppose to be better. We'll have to wait and see until the new set is out before we know just how much better they actually are

I prefer Alpha Strike rules using the mechwarrior age of destruction minis. You can find them pretty cheap now since they have been discontinued.

Alpha strike is a great way to play out larger battles, and to get people interested in the game. But my first few games of Alpha strike left me itching to play the CBT rules instead. I'm designing a campaign using a mix of CBT games (less than 8 units a side) and AS games for larger engagements.
