Anyone know if the guass rifle takes a critical hit and explodes if your using and xl engine your pretty much dead right? Just figured I'd ask, it might be a reason to go with an AC/20 even though range is an issue.

Loving that TS, eh Bucko? =P

In game voice is the biggest thing this game is missing. Might as well add it in yourself. :)

As I understand it, yeah, you're basically toast. It generally hasn't been a problem for me with my one Gauss Hawk, but I don't exactly have a large enough play sample to make a sound judgement.

Been playing for a week or so. Really like the game, but this is not the first mech warrior I have played. Been checking out these forums and this seemed like a good place to start since I am new and cannot post in the general discussion mech/ loadout subforum.

After some reading, settled on a Shadowhawk 2D2 variant for my first mech. Thought about a Hunchback 4SP as well but leaning Shadowhawk.

Did some configuring and came up with the below for a loadout. To preface that, I am looking to keep modest mobility (only limited jump jets, decent speed) and keep with my team. Medium range harassment with enough armor to hang in there for a repositioning if I get caught out of place.

Am I way off base with my loadout, any insight from you more veteran players or anyone else who would like to comment?

Buy Stalker and equip it with LRMs, Streaks and PPCs, it's the most elite 420 1337 MLG PRO skill loadout and people will be congratulating you for using it.

Spent a while online last night and got it built. Learned a couple things and tweaked it right away. Seems pretty good for me at the moment.

3x ssrm, 2x mpl, 1x uac5, bap, endo, ams, dhs, xl280, full armor (front favoring), 2x jj, etc... unloacked all the basic efficiencies... almost enough gxp for advanced zoom.

You all where right about the lrms, tried them and they do not really suit this build well. Maybe in a future missile boat mech.

Really appreciate the help here, learning quick. Hope to attempt a 2H next with triple ac2.

You obviously have not enough skill to use such a MLG PRO loadout, get out of here, Stalker.

That's great to hear, Peanut. Sounds like you're really taking to this like a fish to water!

On a serious note, you people are stupid to advise OP to buy a medium mech when the game is rotting with everyone using heavy assaults mechs, LRM spam, Streaks LOCK-ON cancer and PPCs alphas.

I had 9 kills, 1000 damage Yen-Long-Wang last man standing match and 8 kills 4SP 900 damage uber comeback match and lots of PWNAGEs in 9A and I'm saying playing medium mech right now is hard and certainly not for the novice player.

Wait, did you just say that we're stupid to suggest a medium mech, and then talk about how awesome you are in a medium mech?

What about mediums are bad for novices?

Matches I described were 8+ months ago. Haven't played the game in these months because it was getting worse and worse. 2 days ago I played 20 matches in Jenner and mediums at american time. It was a total nightmare of LRM spam all over the map, streak lock-on cancer and everyone running heavies and assaults. Go figure.

Must be a time of day thing. I tend to play early in the morning (American time), and most of what I see is mediums and heavies, and I don't see much in the way of LRMs. In fact, I've considered turning my Cat A1 into a ROFLpult, to take advantage of the low incidence of LRMs and AMS.

I mostly pilot mediums, and maybe every one in four matches is an LRM heaven for me - on a bad day. On a good day, closer to one in ten. There's a lot of Jagers and Blackjacks in most of matches I'm in, and only a smattering of assault mechs. Personal experience and all that.

I like the mediums so far, it is not fun if it is not a challenge.

They move quickish, are affordable, decent loadout, etc... anyone can go buy a bunch of MC and get an assault but I think you are a better player if you work your way up fighting.

So far my best game is just at 500 damage and 3 kills with a couple assists on the hawk as above. Average game I do a couple hundred damage, 1 kill, and some assists. Almost enough GXP (the hard way) to get advanced zoom. Bought a 2H as well with Cbills and have it all ready to go with 3x ac2 and 3x ssrm... almost full armor (except arms since they have nothing), ams, endo, lots of ammo, etc. Just waiting on enough money to buy the xl245 to power it

Thanks! Appreciate all the help and advise here.

They don't always go that well. I think I have had a 3 kill and 400+ damage only 3 times.

Have advanced zoom now finally and sooo close to getting my 2H triple ac2 up and running. I just cannot bring myself to buy MC so I am grinding it out the hard way.

XL engines are the worst when it comes to grinding - it's why I tend to base my builds on XL engines that I already have.

I would recommend staying away from any engine under a 250 if you have any reason to worry about heat (and with 3 AC/2 you probably will...)

Koniving can (and frequently does) put it better than I, but the invisible DHS in the engine (which caps out with the 250 grades) are full double heat sinks (2.0 more heat cap and dissipation) as opposed to all DHS outside the engine (including those put in to bring you up to the required 10 minimum heatsinks for engines under 250) are only 1.4 more heat cap and dissipation.

In case you were not already familiar with it - every mech needs at least 10 heatsinks. engines come with 1 heatsink per 25 grade (100 grade engines get 4 - 150 get 6 and so on)

I discovered this the hard way yesterday. I configured it on smurfys but neglected to pay attention to the warning in the upper right hand area of the window that stipulated the heat sink requirement was not met. Ugh. So I am now carrying an extra DHS in my loadout.

Not sure about the 3x SSRM I have currently on it with the 3x AC2's. Might change that up for something else. It goes through ammo like crazy as you can imagine. Think I have 4 tons of AC2 on it right now and it will run out on a long match.
