We believe that if those physics were calculated by the GPU, we’d be getting a better performance, and that would save a lot of CPU resources. On the other hand, users reported that Crysis 3 takes advantage of Hyper Threading, meaning that the engine scales incredibly well even on more than four cores. It’s a really weird situation, that gets even worse as there is no physics option to adjust. In addition, even on the lowest settings, we were only getting 45fps in that particular scene. Ouch. We should note that things get better while progressing the game (as our framerate jumped from 30s to 45-50 during a firefight with the CELL in that particular level).

I still recommend i7s, but your budget is kind'a tight …

Keep in mind, the OP is NOT building a general gaming machine; he's building an MWO machine.

He's specifically tailoring this for a specific title, one that does not take to hyperthreading. For his needs, Barbaric's build is perfect.

Not that Cat needs any backup on this, but seconded. Honestly, unless you're doing heavy video editing/transcoding/hyperthreading optimized tasks, the i5 is more than sufficient, and is the best price/performance ratio all around.

Also, don't forget to save $100ish for a copy of Windows [unless you have/can transfer your copy or can get one cheap through work/sale/friend/ etc]

Thanks for all the advice and help guys. Here's the final specs (most the parts are at home now, the case and network adaptor are in the mail).

I dropped the extra fans and the aftermarket CPU cooler (I will upgrade for OC later) in order to get a quiet case for the wife. When I do OC I'm not going to push it to the max so hopefully the case will be cool enough. I'll probably look at combo liquid cooling for the GPU and CPU. I also splurged on the GTX 760 (future proofing, I realize it won't do anything for MWO) in addition to the more expensive case. I also made some on the spot substitutions at microcenter since they were non critical components and they had some specials no to far off of the online prices.

Please realize my final picks can't satisfy everyone, I don't want to start a flame war. The three sources I ended up going with were these.
http://gamegpu.ru/mm...e-test-gpu.html -- i5 is very similar to i7, and 2nd gen is better than new
http://cpuboss.com/c...l-Core-i5-3570K -- 3rd gen and 4th gen are very similar, 3rd gen is better OC
http://www.ocaholic....id=1087&page=14 -- 3rd gen is better
Plus i5 price is $100 less than i7, and 3rd gen is another $30 or $40 cheaper than 4th gen. I don't need the extra mobo features either (I hope, to late now).

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2opRT

I5 3570K 3.4 GHz -- $180 at microcenter
ASRock Z77 Extreme 4 -- $100 at microcenter
Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2 x 4) -- $63 combo with something at microcenter
Western Digital Blue 1TB 7200RPM -- $64 price match at microcenter
Asus GTX 760 2GB -- $260 at microcenter
Corsair 550D ATX Mid Case -- $125
Corsair CX600M 600W 80+ Bronze ATX -- $65 at microcenter
Rosewill N600PCE dual band a/b/g/n -- $25
Windows through work -- cheap

Actual prices (not pcpricepicker options)
Subtotal $733.94 + $125 + $25
Tax on microcenter purchases = $44.04
Rebates = -$10 -$10 -$20
Total = $883

I suck at sticking to a budget (my original hope was to keep it under $600)... wonder what's going to happen when I start house shopping in the spring.

Thanks again everyone. Total time from start to finish was about 16 hours of reading and hunting. Not to bad I think, and I have you guys to thank for it.

And yeah: Budgets are contrary to results

How is Cryengine-as-multiplayer not the deep end of the pool?

The 3570k is a fine choice. I run one (4.2/4.3, don't remember which too lazy to look), and I have no problem running MWO at near 60fps minimums.

It is a better OCer than Haswell, it's true, although who can say whether you'll take advantage of that or not. The differences are small either way, however, so the biggest thing you gain from going Ivy is pocketing a few bucks, and of course, Ivy runs a little cooler :D

i am interested to see how your gtx760 performs as it has 1170 CUDA cores, compared to the 660ti that runs 1344 CUDA cores but slightly less clock speeds

I know its a UK thing, but you are guaranteed to find reliable and powerful systems there.

I only see two problems. First I would increase RAM to 16MB and second if you are going for a GTX 660 card then I recomend a GTX 660ti with 2MB. MWO is a graphics hungry game and you will need the 2GB on the video card. Good luck as I do not use Intel chips.

Suggest getting a Xeon E3 instead of an i5. A E3 is basically an i7 for the cost of an i5. The reason it is cheaper is because it doesn't have an Intel GMA. The only drawback is that you need a server motherboard to support it.

I agree, I have the 660Ti and actually have one with 3gb of ram, got it on new egg for like 240 bucks or so. Love the card.

Besides, MWO is NOT graphically intensive, not unless you're playing at >1920x1200 resolutions. Not that long ago I was playing the game on mostly-high (not very high) settings on a four year old Radeon HD 5850 for Christ's sake, at 1200p. Meanwhile, my 7970 is totally, utterly, massively overkill.
