I'm don't know anything about the lore so bear with me here.
When I started a while back I selected the Merc-Corps because I like the whole idea of that play style. What I'm wondering is how come in game the Mercs have the same icon and abbreviation as the lonewolfs? [LNW]
Does this mean that anyone who doesn't select a faction is automatically lumped in with the Merc-corps? I assumed a lone wolf would be someone who is on their own and not affiliated with anyone at all. If this is the case shouldn't the Mercs get a distinguishing mark?

They should. I was wondering as well.. At the moment, however, the factions are purely cosmetical until Community Warfare.

The reason why you don't have a nicer picture is, that unlike for the Houses there is no established emblem for the Mercenary Hall on Outreach or any of it's competitors and the Devs seem to have made no effort on that matter.
But don't be unhappy about it, you could just pick one of the houses as your current employer, Mercenaries are as common as regular soldiers in the sphere some having contracts that lasted for generations and others... well you know the trade.

Post count spamming aside thanks for the replies. I understand about not having a different icon if one isn't established but, it shouldn't be hard at all for the devs to change [LNW] to [MRC].

Technically, both are mercs. I agree, both should get separate tags, but they don't, so yeah. Lone wolves are lone mercs, merc corps are mercs working together.

Hmm, I don't really see the problem. There are only three types of MechWarriors: House Loyalists, Clanners, and Mercenaries. All of them will be marked as such in the game.
As luxebo said, Lone Wolves are those mercenaries who operate alone, only temporarily joining together with other pilots as part of their contract. For a popular in-universe example, the Bounty Hunter might apply.
Merc Corps on the other hand are units made up of individual mercenaries who have pledged their service and loyalty to the group in order to maximise their survivability by being able to call upon skilled comrades-in-arms, not to mention the group's armouries and technicians, as well as its existing contacts. Their ingame-tag will be defined by whatever the unit leader chooses.

To be fair, if you look at the B-Tech universe a lone wolf merc, is just a merc who's not current employed by a larger merc force. The contracts for 1 merc and a mech are pretty much non-existent, but you'll find lots of solo mercs on outreach ((the merc hiring hall of the time)) looking to hire on to units so they don't go broke.
If you look at how things are set up in the B-Tech universe the cost to get a mech to the battlefield is at times more expensive than the cost of the mechs themselves, so transporting 1 mech with 1 pilot is just silly.
