If you want the best, get 'phracts or jaegers. I think the jaegers are slightly better, but the phracts are more fun and a very close second.

Either of these two heavies are clearly better than the rest, although I'm not sure how good the Orions with the new hitboxes are.

IMHO

Jags are fragile.
Phract have low mounted weapons.

I like Jags a lot. I have all of them.

totally dependant on play style.

The Cataphract, Jagermech and Orion's all have their strong proponents, and none of them are wrong. And the Catapults, Dragons and Quickdraws certainly have their occasional devotee. Thuds do feel redundant to me, but other's swear by them.

But in general, I think the argument generally boils down to Jager vs Phract. I'm in the Jager camp do to the high weapon mounts and large ballistics. Most Phract fanatics focus solely on the 3D, for it's JJs, so that variant certainly is very optimal, but that doesn't actually speak for the chassis as a whole.

From an opponent's prospective, specifically from a medium pilot's, I typically find Phracts to be the more difficult. A Phract can be dangerous in nearly all situations. They've got good weapons, speed and durability. Jags can come loaded for boar true but at the expense of either speed or durability. When you catch them outside their preferred engagement zone they are easier to dance around than a Phract. More often then not if you can take a shoulder off they either die immediately or have just lost a good chunk of their firepower.

The real question is has anyone used the 1X 'phract to recreate the Caesar yet?

Anyway, as for best heavy, probably a toss up between the 3D 'phract and any of the Jagers. The K2 Catapult, once the Terror of Beta, is still solid, though has been largely replaced by Jagers (especially the Firebrand).

Orions might be a contender now that they've got some hit boxes that fit with the other heavy mechs.

I have honestly done really well with a Dual PPC, AC-10 and quad streak Orion-VA.

Another good one is the Orion-K with an AC 20 and 4 medium lasers, and then some missiles of your choice.

I'm a fan of the ballistics-heavy Phracts (Ilya or 4x, though JJ on 3D great too). More of brawlers than Jager which fits my playing style. In terms of the Orion, I have a ON1-V which 'should' be good, 2xLL, AC10, 3xSRM6 but I just can't seem to make it work for me as well as my phracts.

I would say that the Cataphract is the top heavy but others would claim that it is the Jagermech since it can run more/heavier ballistics. Right now if you want to figure out which is better just count the number of ballistics that a mech can carry that will tell you what is best for people, since energy can barely compete with ballistics. If you prefer a support mech then the Catapult/Thunderbolt is better. Speed? Then the Dragons is best. Maneuvering? That would be the Quickdraws. I can go on all day with this but to pick the best mech you have to find out what you are best with and go with the right mech for you.

The Caesar is a death trap. One thing that I learned long ago is that putting a Gauss Rifle in a ST with an XL equals an early grave. Once your armor is gone, 5 hp goes very fast and then having the GR blow up will most likely kill you. Also CASE is useless in MWO with XLs so might as well put that .5 ton as ST armor to protect that GR. Another thing that I learned is canon mechs suck in MWO.

Yeah, this is all stuff I already know. I mean, it's hard to play this game for even a month and not learn this stuff.

Cataphract (3D mostly) / Jagers / Quickdraws. Orions, Catapults, Dragons and Thunderbolts (when they'll come out) have become second or third choices, imho of course.

Now that I have played the Orions more I feel like it is a toss up between the top 3 contenders. Orion, Cataphract, and Jeagermech.

I still have to try out those, I scrapped them immediately. They still suffer from very low-mounted weapons and now they can't go unpunished around with XL engines.. That's something I'll do after the Shadowhawks.
