I really hope he is right, not necessarily so we can have big walking tanks, but for its potential as cheap reliable energy. That is my biggest beef with some of the renewable sources that we have today. If its not windy or sunny enough there is not as much power generated and other (usually fossil fuels) need to be brought in to provide baseline power. Fusion would solve these issues. Now I am a biologist by training so I cant speak in depth about fusion beyond what we covered in intro physics and chemistry, but it seems like fusion is like the male birth control pill, always 20 years away.

Without getting into conspiracy theories, Fusion won't be available to the masses until we absolutely have to stop using fossil fuels. The powers that be lose to much for Fusion to become a reality.

Not sure about this. After the problems that happened in Japan many reactors are slated to be shut down.

Michio Kaku is a big goof and you shouldn't listen to anything he says if it isn't about theoretical physics.

Galileo Galilei was also ridiculed when he said the Earth revolved around the sun.

I was laughing at the guy who thinks the Japanese are going to shut down all their fusion reactors for being really dumb but wow you're good at it too!

He's right though. Perhaps you should be laughing at yourself...?

Check out "General Fusion". They aren't using the inefficient and expensive Tokamak design like the ITER, or the low-output and expensive laser-catalyzed ICF. It is a entirely new design that is much cheaper and offers alot of promise, and can supposedly make 110MW output from a 10MW input.

michio kaku is an amazing guy. He featured heavily in my final project presentation on the potential mechanisms of time travel. He has a beautiful way of explaining the inexplicable :)

The thing to remember about Michio Kaku, is that he is a theoretical physicist. Meaning everything he says, while it may be true, is just theoretical.

For those interested, the experimental fusion reactor ITER in France is the testbed for future demo reactors with an output of 1000-2000 MW.

Here's a roadmap for the things to come. The energy gain column (see table 1) is probably the most interesting. While the current reactor is expected to produce 10 times more energy than necessary to power it, the (even) bigger models are expected to produce 25 times more.

It is also safe to assume that Japan will have the first commercial reactor online as they have access to key components that are rather difficult to acquire/produce.

Cheers

If stating a fact is dumb, you sure have a strange sense of humour.

That is true and theories are not guaranteed to lead to anything consequential. However, most great discoveries and advancements in technology started out with a theory.

I'd like to see the fusion become available soon, but as mechs go, there won't be any walking tanks any time soon for military purposes, at least as ground/planetary weapon systems

not too soon, but i´m sure the japanese will not stop until they have at least a functioning mech for the show of it :) and i´m not talking about those toys from the youtube vids :P

Yeah, if the devlopment of the steam engine is any indication, Mechs might be like 50 years away after the first commercial fusion reactors go online. So with any luck we may see Mechs in 2100 ... and have BT beaten soundly by 300+ years ... take that LOL
