Just throwing out ideas but I have a few ideas on how PGI could try to balance the playing field.

Yes you buy weapons for your mechs but seeing as how omni-mechs use pods perhaps you'd have to buy a specific pod for a particular weapon type of a given size.

IE you want to mount an Clan ER Large Laser on your Dir Wolf, this would require you to buy a one slot energy pod mounting which would be able to fit any clan laser BUT not a PPC. Also to control people who want to mount 30 machine guns on their mech >.< (raises hand) each weapon pod must have a non weapon pod slot adjacent to it. IE
weapon pod
open slot
weapon pod

So if you had a clan XL engine in your omni mech (more than likely) then you'd have room (doing the math 12-2=10/2=5) for about 5 single slot weapon pods in each side torso. Of course there could also be a maximum number of weapon pods allowed in a given part of the mech.

In addition this would mean if you threw a ER small laser into a two slot energy weapon pod you'd be wasting space >.<

Perhaps the pricing could be... lets say 150K per slot the pod has so an 8 slot ballistic pod (for a Clan UAC/20) would cost a whopping >.< 1,200,000 c-bills?

ADDITIONAL: You want to switch out your engine or armor you say? Well you can do that with your omnimech but it costs 25% of the mech's price and all weapon pods become fixed. This would make rather irritating for people who want more tonnage to deal with weapons and want to swap out their load outs every match. You of course and swap back to the omni specs but it costs 25% of the mechs value again.

Additional 2: Keep clan damage, range, and heat but increase beam duration for lasers, decrease projectile speed for ER PPCs, clan ACs could fire multiple rounds to do the same damage, all clan weapons could have a longer cool down than their IS counter parts. Also (ghost heat) would be increased if two adjacent pods had the same type of weapon >.< stagger your weapons. Also omnimechs have less effective gyros so could their cockpit shake not be higher than an IS mech to the point it even rocks some when said clan mechs fires its own ACs?

As an example a clan UAC/20 fires 10 rounds of 2 damage or a clan UAC/10 fires 4 rounds of 2.5 damage.
