It seems more and more people aren't aware of the shiny little blue button in the bottom right hand corner of the lobby screen with the word "Social" on it. This pertains mostly to new players, I would think. When that button is clicked on, a list of your in-game contacts is brought up, with four tabs across the top (Friends/Group/Invites/Blocked). The social button will (generally) flash when you have a prompt, so it pays to keep an eye on it. Sadly, there's no audio to go with the prompt, and no way to tell if you're tabbed out (in the forums, perhaps?) and get a message - at least not yet.
In-game chat keys are as follows:
T to chat to all
Y to chat to team
U to chat to lance
Utilizing the chat in-game is a *great* thing to do, both to make friends, and to help your team to respond to threats.

Yep - if you run into enemies and you don't have a UAV or something, hit your team-chat key and give them your grid reference. Every little helps!

I like to quickly type the grid of the nme then if it's clear then number and type of mechs. AC40 Jagers should be first to go down, then the rest should fall in line.
Also a word of caution, the default mapping of the IN-GAME TEXT CHAT puts the TEAM and GLOBAL chat commands way to close for my liking. I would recommend remapping them to be further away to prevent typing important info to the nme y mistake.
I went for "T" for TEAM, "I" for GLOBAL, and "Y" for LANCE.
