Here are several community-run tournaments I can think of on top of my head.
Run Hot or Die -- arguably where the top teams compete, based off tonnage-limited bracket tourney.

Marik Civil War, based on resources, loadout rules, tonnage limits, planetary control.

Proxis, based on mech ownership, tonnage limits, dropships, planetary control.

Inner Sphere Wars.

Behold it in all its spendid glory.
And that's about it for now. The devs have promised a metagame based on planetary conquest, however it's presently a year overdue, has been pushed back several times, and even the latest schedule - if it is to believed - won't have it delivered until August 2014.
Til then, we'll all be playing PokeMech Deathmatch.

What about my honest and accurate answer did you find unhelpful?
Are you aware of some other ''goal of the grind'' that has escaped our collective attention?
Or do you just find the truth unhelpful?

It clearly isn't their goal of mwo, it's not their vision and you know that. Unfortunately delays have upset people but try not to troll a new players post

By "sync-dropping", or in other words by relying on the graces of the mech gods. If both teams hit "Launch" at the same time, there is nontrivial chance they will be matched against each other if the game modes are aligned.
Yes, we have wasted literal days and nights trying to sync-drop. If we fail to sync-drop, sometimes we do suicide runs against unsuspecting teams, that way they can brag about it after ;-). More seriously, nowadays we announce it was a missed sync-drop, and invite them to a quick, all-out brawl.
Yes, it is very very painful. We do it for the love of stompy mechs.

The social menu allows you to make two types of teams: up to 4 players, and 12 player teams. 2-4 player teams play in the same queue as pub players, and 12 man teams play in the dedicated 12 vs 12 mode.
groups that focus on 4-player teams are much more common. The player run leagues/events generally use the 12 vs 12 queue and coordinate to drop at the same time (sync drop) and then record the outcome of the match(with different leagues using different rules and goals). If they fail to meet the sync, it's simply a matter of trying again.

He asked ''what is the point of the grind?'' He didn't ask ''what will be the point of the grind - at some point in the future if/when the developers actually code a metagame''.
It's not trolling to tell him the simple truth of MWO as it currently stands. However, in deference to your concerns, I amended my earlier post to mention the long overdue promised metagame.

But it is true that if you desire more than pub drops or 4-mans, you should look to the community for 12 v 12 or community-run leagues/events/challenges/things.

I agree that joining a team makes it even more fun.
Like all of us, I can only imagine how much extra fun it will be if/when the devs eventually deliver Community Warfare.

The Battletech community: Providing what PGI won't since 2011.
In all seriousness, if you're interested in serious organized games, join a unit that participates in these leagues. You will have dozens of times more fun!

Nope. Marik rules occasionally dictate no PPC. Proxis has mech limits.
comunity comes to the rescue ones again. I applaud you guys. IGPGI dont deserve such a great comunity as this one.

The nice thing about free-to-play games is you're not paying wasting money if you're not playing.
I'm thinking about taking a break until PGI releases something new. The current matches are fun, but they got old.
When UI 2.0 shows up, I'll be back for a while.
When Community Warfare shows up, I'll be back for a while.
When the clans show up, I'll be back for a while.
In the mean time, I'll be doing something else. Games are supposed to be fun, and if they stop being fun you should just do something else for a while and check back occasionally.

Even without the restrictions, Run Hot or Die dictates different tactics in different weight restrictions too. It'd be nice if they'd mess with the weapons more - there's still some duds - but organized games are definitely a lot more fun.
The PPC Poptart thing was before they finally fixed the PPC directly instead of trying to indirectly and round-a-bout fix it with Ghost Heat. There were 8 months or so that it was the norm outside of restrictions!
Either way OP it's like playing a whole other game - a far better game - in these leagues. Definitely check them out!

Better than 50% chance that OP is a troll, IMO. A more constructive troll than most, but an account created by one of our more subtle frequent posters.
Truly, there is no other activity available than grinding so that when CW starts we all have enormous fleets of mechs with gargantuan bank accounts. There are hundreds if not thousands of players with enough Mechs to equip planetary invasions on their own, and how the CW will "balance" that, I don't know.

Unfortunately, I bought 360 days of premium. I feel obliged to play every day...
