I've always done gaming with a joystick and having a really tough time at getting the default keyboard mech movement. (A, D, W and S). Tried throttle lock and focus on A/D without much success.
What advice do you folks have?
Other than being a resource for others to earn xp's and C-bills in a duck shoot on a standing target.
Thanks in advance.

Keyboard + mouse is the best combo. Some use joystick but I am not aware of any top shooters using joystick (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). Throttle decay is a bit up for debate. I like it for fast mechs, but never use it for slower mechs.
If you haven't yet, you should practice in Training Grounds. Get familiar with moving your mech around, torso-twisting, aiming. Then practice shooting-while-moving. Move laterally while shooting, move in ellipses while shooting, do mech ballet moves until you are comfortable and you can hit your stationary targets.
In order to get proficient at shooting and hitting a moving target, you have to be so against a stationary target. For that, Training Grounds is priceless.

Do you still have a stick? MWO does support joystick input although it's not as simple as it ought to be.
Don't use the throttle decay- get used to setting a speed and let your mech keep going at that speed. you can also tap a numpad # to set a speed (numpad5 sets throttle to 50%)
Keep practicing, and try some different control schemes including a stick.

Do you have a joystick with a z axis, maybe the stick it twists like an old Microsoft sidewinder? The twist on the stick can be used to twist the torso. Throttle control for forward and reverse and the stick for side to side and up and down torso. I used to play all of the old Mech titles with a joystick and did pretty good with it. In fact I still have mine.

I turned throttle decay off, and remapped some throttle keys to below WASD:
Shift = reverse throttle
z = full stop
x = 70% throttle (or whatever you like for "go slower")
c = full throttle
This makes for easy access to instant desired speed changes. Note that actual speed changes are never instant -- they depend on the mech and unlocked skills.

I did hook up my old sidewinder precision pro.
While it helped with control, MWO is not really friendly with analog sticks yet and the joystick response is verrryy slow.
What I'm understanding from all of your advice is practice, practice, and more practice.
eventually, I'll get the hang of it.
Until then, I'm providing a great service to everyone with an easy kill for C-bills and xp's.
Hopefully, after about 150 games, I may even have enough to buy my own mech.
I've got my eye set on a Phract 3D and get some C-bills to enhance the loadout with PPC's
Thanks again.

There are many vatriables you can tune to get more responsiveness from your stick,. you need a modified CFG file to really get it going, and even then most players will say a keyboard+mouse is better anyway.

If you are having problems setting up your joystick, add the following to your USER.CFG file:
The things you'll want to play with are:
cl_joystick_gain - The higher this value is set to, the faster a full throw of the joystick is going to move the reticule.
cl_joystick_sensitivity - The smaller this value is set to, the more sensitive your joystick will become. E.g. a slight throw of the joystick will trigger the movement. i.e. If you set this number to something big like 5, you'll smash the crud outta your joystick trying to get anything to move (which is funny in itself).
cl_joystick_throttle_range - This is a flag to tell your Joystick to have a middle STOP zone when the throttle is centered. Pushing forward makes you go forward, pulling back makes you go backward and putting the throttle in the middle will make you stop. I HIGHLY suggest you don't mess with this value. No I'm not going to help you with anything if you've messed with this value.
cl_joystick_invert_throttle - This will make sure that when you push forward on your throttle, you're going to accelerate.
cl_joystick_invert_pitch - When this is set to 1, you will look up when you pull BACK on the joystick. You will look down if you press FORWARD on the joystick. This is how airplanes work and how you should leave it unless you're some sort of demon spawn that does it backwards. If you are demon spawn, then set the value to 0 if you want to look the wrong direction when pressing forward or back on the joystick.
cl_joystick_deadzone - This is the amount of non-movement wiggle room when you're joystick is centered. The smaller you make this, the less wiggle room there will be.
NOTE:
Remember, turning a Mech (it's feet) is a DIGITAL (on/off) movement at the moment. This means when you press left or right to turn your Mech, it turns just like you're pressing the A or D key on the keyboard. Slight movements on the joystick react like a key press. We know this is not how sim players want it and it should be small movements = slow turns. The problem is, the fix requires a huge code update on Mech movement. This is something we cannot tackle at the moment but it IS going to be addressed. We just can't give you a confirmed date of delivery.
cl_joystick_gain = 8 cl_joystick_sensitivity = 0.75 cl_joystick_throttle_range = 0 cl_joystick_invert_throttle = 1 cl_joystick_invert_pitch = 1 cl_joystick_invert_yaw = 0 cl_joystick_invert_turn = 0 cl_joystick_deadzone = 0.1

If you're having a hard time with controls, then you're probably having a hard time aiming, ergo you'll hate PPCs. I recommend something else, maybe something like this.

Or if you're still having a hard time with aiming, switch out the AC20 for a LB-10x, then move up engine size.
