Why do my frame rates go from great to "lol I ain't moving" when particle effects / smoke appear really close to my cockpit?

I can run this game on highest settings at 60+ fps, but the moment some particles or smoke appear within arms length of my mech cockpit, they dump to less than 5 fps. I have tried to turn down all of my settings to lowest possible but it still happens. Anyone have any suggestions?

If you could provide your system specs, that might help us diagnose the problem.

Also, try running at a lower resolution, just as a test.

Seconded. Specs will help, though I can already tell you you're severely bottlenecked by your CPU. EITHER you have a very old/weak/dual core CPU *OR* you're on a gaming notebook trying to play unplugged *OR* you've got your power options set to something like Battery Saver/Power saver.

Theoretically it could be a weak GPU, but dropping the resolution/performance tabs should net SOME improvement . . . unless the video card is an old, slow, dated card [which would compound a weak CPU issue.

Just a prediction. Without specs and more info there's no way to know for sure.

As I said before I did run at both highest and lowest. Average FPS is the same but those spikes from particles/smoke effects are present in both settings

Specs:
Core i7 3770k
8GB DDR3 1600MHz ram
Asus P8Z68-V Pro/Gen3 mobo
AMD Radeon HD 7700 GHz edition

I don't have any issues with BF3, no issues on a modded Skyrim (combo of 2k/4k resolution and a bunch of lighting mods, so the detail is incredible) or any games that I play.

^- i7 certainly is not low end, and I have identical issues with a 3.4 Ghz i7 2600k, as well, though my average frame rate is in the mid 30's. Specifically rears its head when overheating, having the steam effect, while zoomed in.

How much RAM does the card have?

Go into the game's advanced graphics settings and set Environment to Low and see how that works. Keep all of the other settings as you have them now.

I've stated that I have turned ALL advanced graphics to low before in my very first post, please stop making me repeat myself, that ISN'T solving the issue.

I also do no over heat, the hottest my CPU runs is ~68c

The video card has 1GB of RAM on board, here is a link with a bit more specs on the card

Did you try them all at Low one at a time, or all at once? Doing them all at once wouldn't have the same effect -- it may even make performance worse than having settings maxed. This is due to having lesser demand on the GPU so it wouldn't ramp up to full clock speed.

Put Environment at Low and everything else maxed.

wheezerx isn't the only one with this issue, I've been having very similar issues, only difference is my fps tanked at mid or long range, it did it on occasion for a bit, but went away after I did a repair.

here wheezerx, in case you don't know about it: http://mwomercs.com/...public-release/

I have seen GPUz measure MWO's VRAM usage at above 1GB, so if the repair tool doesn't work some kind of magic that's likely the culprit. I had games that would do the same thing on my 512mb 4870 some years ago.

I'm always above 1200MB in game; I think I had only 7MB free in the last DX11 test …

Started noticing this too tonight, everytime I get up in some smoke framerate plummets from a perfectly healthy 30-50 into single digits.

Thought my GPU was throttling but it never gets above 67 degrees.

Somebody done goofed.

I have seen real bad framerate drops in a furball with a lot of mechs. as well which didn't happen that much before. And some spots on maps seem to generate a lot of lag when you go through them as well.

Found this through seach, i have this issue too/still, i got a new computer and although my frame rate is normally beast when i back up while heating up my fps drops to worse then my old piece of junk computer

gtx 770m 3gig
i7 - 4700hq
its an Asus Republic of gaming laptop, and not a cheap either so it should be handling it fine

anyone found a fix for this issue yet?

sorry to necro, but i want to record this for my youtube channel but can't due to this glitch/fps drop

I had the same issue. AFAIK it appears to be related to DX11 Tesselation.
The reason could reside either in the implementation details of CryEngine, or how MWO uses it.. it's impossible to try to guess any further

You can either:
- Revert the game back to DX9, or
- Set "Particles" to LOW

I have currently the game running on 1920x1080, DX11 enabled and:
- Effects: Very High
- Object Detail: Very High
- Particles: Low
- Post Processing: High
- Shading:Very High
- Shadows: Very High
- Texturng: Very High
- Environment: Very High
- AA: Off

--> Runs within constant 30 - 50 FPS on GTX 470, Core i7 860, 8GB Ram.
PPC doesn't look as nice as it used to, and the missiles have no smoke trail, but at least I can now aim while heating.

What amd driver are you using? I got the best performance with the older 13.12whql drivers. See if that helps.
