This will be pretty short, but in the launch screen is factions meant to be greyed out? Is that meant to be only for like alpha players?

Not sure I understand specifically which screen you speak of but sounds like you just need to pick a faction.
Im pretty sure you can do whether or not your new or veteran.
To do so...go to profile/faction (tab) and then select your house/merc/or lonewolf.

Yes it is meant to be greyed out. Currently factions are not implemented into the game. You can go to your profile and select a faction as xMEPTHISTOx says but at the moment that's it. However PGI do have a lot more planned when it comes to factions. Here is a video from the launch event where Byran lays out what their plans are for factions and Community Warefare (also not yet implemented):

Also...if new to the bt/mw universe you may want to do some research on the houses. I always use sarna (http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Main_Page) for infos on the lore, mechs, and other stuffs including the books.

Correct, the faction tab in the mechlab is merely a placeholder; there is no faction function in the front end. you can adjust your faction on the website: https://mwomercs.com/profile/faction
Faction only affects your forum pic and a little faction badge in the team info board.

i would add if you look further down at factions inner sphere you will find established groups using 3rd party comms to hunt with. the FRR hub has a nice community that tries to form 4vs4 fights or 1vs1 duels if the sync gods are on our side.

sadly, they completely skipped succession wars and all that goodness because they wanted to rush clans out before community warfare was even out. Reason? Money. will we ever see CW? It's doubtful.
In Aug 2012, CW was the main draw to gain support from founders. In Jan-Feb 2013, it was 60-90 days away, and then they admitted halfway through the time period they hadn't even started working on it. It's an example of someone who keeps promising something they cant deliver in order to look like they're okay. Like the friend who tells you they'll do X for you, and makes up some excuse later on why they didn't. Only this friend's getting paid and still not doing it.
