Although you cannot buy them for C-Bills for a few more months still, you can practice building them how you want on smurfy's

Griffin would be February
Wolverine would be March
Or the Griffy and Wolvy could be swapped but you get the idea

January the Battlemaster becomes available for cbills. February either the Wolverine or Griffin will become available. March the other (wolverine or griffin) will become available.
In the meantime if you want to predesign one, take a peek at this link which will directly lead you to one of the Wolverine variants.
Wolverines can be found as medium battlemechs in the 55-ton category. They are very right-arm heavy for their weapons. Their left arms will never hold weapons but may sometimes contain ammo (typically lots of heatsinks). AMS is in the right shoulder of all 3 models currently available. Missiles can be found in the left or right torsos.
If their shoulder launchers are short, they are sporting SRMS or streaks. If they are as tall as their head, they are sporting LRMs.
An interesting note: Since they use the same animations as the Highlander and Battlemaster (with the body rigged like a Battlemaster), their cockpit sways left and right when they are moving fast making it harder to hit. Headshots are best delivered to them when they are stationary or slowing down for a tight turn.
Wolverines have identical max armor to Shadowhawks, Griffins, and Kintaros. Unlike Shadowhawks, a lot less weight is consumed in weapons generally (due to a lack of ballistics) which allows them more weight for engines or missile ammo or higher end energy. Also unlike Kintaros and Griffins, the Wolverines have a per launcher cap of "10" tubes which does limit the LRM-potential to the point of not being "LRM boat friendly."
The Wolverines have a good amount of horizontal and vertical ability (Griffin is better at one, Wolverine is better at the other; can't recall which) which makes them very good with leaping tactics. Energy weapons are very good even when fired during jumps, unlike ballistics. Lock-on missiles are unaffected by flight, too.
In general I believe you'll like Wolverines when you can get them.

Wolverines are better at up/down engagements. They also very much like being close in brawler yin to the griffin's long range yang.

Sounds right. Makes sense too -- the Griffin's got an incredible horizontal view. keep in mind I've been wrapped up in DayZ the past few days, and with 80+ mechs it can be easy to mix up particular traits that usually go unnoticed.
