MG are okay on fast mechs when you have three or more. Less than three and it isn't worth not torso twisting - and the speed of the mech itself makes the lack of torso twist not as bad. I keep three on my favorite shadowhawk.

Trust me, I know the limited range is a serious drawback in this game, most likely due to the fact that minimum range has been taken off of most weapons compared to the tabletop.
Nah, it's not even that - it's jump-firing accuracy and its effect on combat ranges. Because high-alpha, pinpoint-damage weapons are so often used, it's hard for brawlers to get into effective range of long-range 'mechs - this has had the effect of curbing pure brawlers in current play. That in turn means that using high-damage, low DPS sniper builds isn't as much of a drawback as it could be, and makes other long-range 'mechs (with UAC/5s, Ac/2s, LRMS, that sort of thing) much easier to play - which makes getting across kill zones even more punishing. It's all interlinked - the brawlers would have the advantage if they got into close range, but the combination of jump sniping and dakka makes it difficult to do so.

PS: I use MGs on lights - I've splashed them on larger 'mechs when I had extra tons and a heat-efficient build, but it didn't seem worth it for the limitations.

MGs are only good if you have 3 or more and only against stripped armor and only if you've got no better alternative weapons (like on the locust)

To be honest I think I'd take a super soaker before I'd bother wasting tonnage on an MG. Though, I'd take an MG ten times over before I'd take a flamer..

But we have no choice on some of the variants, like LCT-1V, or SDR-5K. What are we gonna use, freaking AC10 Locust or something?
