Will ComStar (and/or Word of Blake) be a player faction or strictly relegated to NPC status?

I would believe that ComStar will be left as a neutral party until the Clan Invasion starts.

Word of Blake didn't exist as a separate faction until the Schism with Comstar in 3052.

I'd join Comstar just to drive those pure Star League era mechs. Peace of Blake and blah, blah, blah. Just gimme a spankin' shiny, brand new, 500 year old Lancelot. Maybe an Exterminator with the original spec null sig and light polarization shield.

1. Join the ComGuard
2. Can't play with most other people because you aren't a Merc, and can only play ComStar sanctioned missions
3. Stuck in misery like this for 2 years
4. Tukayyid happens
5. You join the real-time planet-wide war under the command of an Admin playing Anastasius Focht
6. AAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWW YEAAAAAAAAAAAH

I'd love to be able to align with ComStar, but I figure they'll most likely use ComStar as their central platform for admin-ness... like most MW4 leagues did.

It's possible that they could become a faction after the Clans arrive - remember the Com Guards were revealed to the world at large at the battle of Tukayyid in 3052.

No WoB please, and Comstar is possible but only after Tukkayid, imo.

Would rather they stay NPCs, though.

Agree with Jack on this... the WOBBIES have no need in the year we are starting. ComStar was neutral then up until the Clan Invasion. And would like them to be NPC's until it is time.

Comstar needs to die. They have caused nothing but trouble.

Yeah, Tukkayyid was a big trouble at some point. Clan's point.

Unconfirmed if such Exterminators even existed.
And if they did, Kerensky would've taken all of them with him on the Exodus.

Neutral? Shipping downgraded (and some pristine) Star League 'Mechs to the DCMS back in the 3030s is considered neutral?
Then there's the fact that C* supplied/payed pirates to attack various worlds around the turn of the millenium (c3000) under false flags.
Or the case of Operation Holy Shroud (and its part 2).

If anything, C* only claimed neutrality while secretly tried to bring down the IS.

If it were me designing the game I'd leave both ComStar are The Clans as NPC material. One of the requirements of story-line and background is that those controlling such things have access to the ability to control the environment and this is in no way easier than by controlling the significant players.
If I'm understanding the situation correctly the Successor States will be featured as employers for mercenary players rather than as factions we actively join. ComStar can fit this role perfectly, though the number of available missions will dramatically increase as the ComGuards are revealed and ComStar takes a more active role in the Sphere's politics. I don't expect to see much of them to start with.
As an employer ComStar may well be able to provide access to specific tech upgrades, at least after they reveal that they have that technology. Something like a "Do this for us and we'll give you an ER Laser" system would work. Similar tech access through the Successor States would be an interesting way of restricting some of the tech that is rarer in-universe, including 'Mechs that are exclusively built by a particular faction. Want a Wolfhound? better get in good with the Lyrans then.

I'd love to see something like this in game. I play League of Legends a bit, and it's always been a bit of a disappointment for me that, as much as they develop the game's background, it never makes any difference for the actual matches. You can STILL have Jarvan and Swain on the same team, even though the game's lore expressly states that they'll kill each other if given the chance. For that matter, you can own both champions and nobody seems to care.

Of course, having a Capellian-exclusive mech and working for the Federated Commonwealth isn't as big of a problem lore-wise (you killed a dude in a Men Shen. Sure, why not?), but I do like the idea of aligning with one faction and gaining access to some exclusive mechs because of it. It'll make some designs special, but not necessarily better (Everyone has access to the Atlas, only DC guys can get a Hatamoto)

It would give an interesting edge to what employers to pick based not only on what tech you could get in payment but in who you will be fighting to pick up salvage from. I have done that sometimes in the MW2 and 4 Mercs games, picked an employer not because I like what they are doing but because there's a chance of salvaging the mechs I REALLY want from their opponents.

Comstar has garrison troops guarding the HPG's, I can potentially see a situation where one might come into conflict with them.
