Could it be some Automatic Update restarting your system? I have long since placed my updates on "Ask me when there are updates" compared to "Automatic". Got tired of my computer spontaneously "restarting" when I was in the middle of something.
Beyond that, don't really know. Seems a little backwards to me. Most people seem to have problems and shutdowns while in a battle, not in the client screen. Could your system possibly be ramping up the FPS when out of combat? Making the system crash? Was a known bug not too long ago...

Well, I have a confirmed GPU that seems to overheat, but not on the menu it will do it in game. Any suggestions on how to make it run cooler? (I've opened my desktop case to help it vent. More info on my personal problem (if you wish to help) here: http://mwomercs.com/...fter-the-match/ . It's getting very annoying to me, and it didn't do it when in an older computer.)

The only tips that I can think of is keep it closed towers are designed for airflow and by opening it up you are slowing it down (I have seen some older systems overheat with the case off). Neatening up the wiring usually helps along with removing any dust in the heat sink, fan, and vents. If not of that helps bigger fans and heat sinks (when placing them try to imagine the flow of water through the case and any obstacles will reduce its effectiveness) are the way to go but my personal favorite though somewhat complicated and requires maintenance is a water cooling system. Nice and quiet and you will never have to worry about heat (although you might have to about condensation).

It is weird but the MWO menu UI pushes GPU much harder than the newest games ever will. Mine will never run with more than 1/4 to 1/2 the fan speed but even with water cooling it will run hot when I am in the menu.

Well, the reason I have the case open is the fan for the GPU points down, right into the bottom of the computer casing. I'm guessing it isn't venting enough from the tiny few holes they punched into the side plate. It also has no rear exhaust fan either, which is strange as every computer I have ever own has had a back exhaust fan.
Not liking this "new tech" stuff. Almost tempted to just ignore the new computer I just bought and go back to my old tower. (till the hard drive finally croaks...) I found out that my old dual core had more processing power than a lot of same priced new computers have now... and we are talking about a 7 year old computer. Guess they don't make them like they use to. (The computer I am using now is new as of not even a month. But I've already had to replace the power supply for a more robust one, and add in my oldish video card.)
Maybe I can salvage a comparable fan from one of my old dead computers laying around... For now, it "seems" to be running cooler (to the touch) with the case open...

That does sound bad and possibly because companies cut corners and build PCs to handle internet browsing but little else. I am actually running a 2007 Alienware that was top of the line then but now with some of the newer game the video card cannot keep up. So I use may laptop for now since its Intel 4000 runs the newer games with a few more FPS but I want to strip out the casing, flush the water in the cooling system (never touched it in 7 years), and upgrade everything in it to a modern system but that will have to wait for when I can afford it. Something that I just thought of is did you try lifting the computer up so that there is more space under it to allow for more airflow possibly drilling some more holes or enlarging them. Hope that helps with your system.

Glad it works for you. I'm still trying to solve my own similar problem. (Sorry if I kinda, hijacked your thread, but they seem like related issues.)
I'll get more fans in mine.
I have a Radeon 6770 card myself. Use to run well in my old computer, but in this new one, well, don't know what the difference is. Maybe because the processor is better it's throwing more it's way faster? Making it run warmer?
More fans. Yes.
