Once you are updated with the downloads from the Patcher, this tool can help make sure your game client keeps on running: MWO Repair Tool
First go to settings on the bottom right of the screen to lower settings to Low or Medium depending on rig for starters and if you want you can adjust from there. We can help you if need more details. There are also toggles for Arm Lock and Acceleration and ability to remap Keys, also you can adjust mouse settings, so that would depend on what feels better for you.
Then, you will have access to four Trial Mechs and will have four empty mech bays.
But before going into a match check out the Tutorial. To access it click on the gear with the little mech and run the Tutorial.
After that use the Testing Grounds to get a feel for the trial mechs and the weapons to test out different settings.
After that jump in the Trials for at least 25 matches to earn your Cadet Bonus. And before you make your first purchase we can give suggestions based on your preferences.
Hope that's a good start and we are here to help so ask away!

I haven't played Mechassault much, and it's been a very long time. So, sorry. I can't say if your experience there will be the same here.
Do you know what your normal play style might be? We can help you out with possible mech and weapon suggestions if.

First, the learning curve is quite steep at the moment. You also get a special cadet bonus for the first 25 matches to help you on your way to buying a new mech. Test out the trial mechs and try to get a feel for how to play each weight class to give you an idea where to go for your first mech.
And of course as other have said, if you have any questions feel free to ask!
Can't really compare to Mechassault, but I'm sure if your willing to adapt to something different and love mechs, you should be good to go!

I'll say though, Mechassault 2 is better than Mechassault Phantom Wars.
But pretty much Praetor Shepard covered most of the things.
But pretty much Praetor Shepard covered most of the things.Edit: Since nobody has linked smurfy yet, here. http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab You will find that there is actually customization, unlike Mechassault 2 where you just jack some random mechs to fight the mission, and then when you die you either revert to some checkpoint or eject and go steal more mechs. At least Mechassault 1 had the you only live once prospect, and when mech goes boom, it stays dead.

Premium time will apply it's multiplier (+50%) to the cadet bonus, so I recommend collecting some free premium time to maximize your initial income to get you off to a smoother start. Check my sig for up to 8 free days of premium time; the happyholidays bonus will likely be ending soon

But apart from that it is more like the other Mech warrior (not Assault or Commander) games... minus the single player campaigns and quite a bit of other stuff.

Mechassault 2 wasn't a particularly good game compared to the Mechwarrior series. It's akin to what Front Mission Evolved did to the Front Mission series.
On MWO, until you get 'elite' skills, there is momentum on all mechs which takes time to accelerate and stop. Once you have them, you cut all that by 55% which is an insane amount that needs to be changed and can't seem to be changed fast enough.
Beyond that, you will find many differences including pulse lasers being lasers of flickering frequencies rather than Klingon Disruptors.

This game is more...cautious, a thinking man's shooter.

Shameless plugin: I am currently writing a thread summarizing each mech in the game.

They take place in the same universe, yes, but this is comparable to the mechwarriror series on PC. I'm guessing you think it looks similar from sceenshots taken in 3rd person. The mechs look great in this game (I remember the graphics of MechAssault 2 also looking fantastic at the time), but they play very very differently. We don't have only 3 weapon systems on a mech, no powerups, nothing like that. It is also multiplayer matches only--no single player campaign.
