What Smoke could do for you?
-Allows for concealed advances through open terrain.
-Can neutralize direct fire weaponry for a short period of time. No sight = poor accuracy.
-Escape mechanic for all weight classes of mechs.
-Also gives lights some other ballistic to slot other than mg's.
Does it exist already?

-Stand alone weapon system
Smoke Shell Auto-Cannon (Smoke SC or Smoke AC)
Tons: 3
Slots: 2
Max Range: 350m
Rounds per ton: 2-4
Smoke
Area of effect: 150m diameter circle
Duration: 15-25s
Height: 1.5 - 2 Atlas's
Just a rough draft I wouldn't know how to balance it correctly for in game but it just seems like such an elegant mechanic to have in game.
Other things which could be a part of the Smoke Cloud or random thoughts.
-IR smoke feature: Blinding to Thermal vision.
-Vision/lock-on reduction while inside of smoke cloud. Down to something like 100m or less.
Let me know what you think or if you have your own suggestion pertaining to smoke grenades, mortars or w/e let me know.
