So I was thinking of what the ultimate skirmish map would look like. It would need to persuade players to meet at a location for a big fight, but still allow players to attempt flanking maneuvers. What I was imagining was a sort of terraced funnel: a lot like a strip mine.

There would still need to be a lot of cover to limit the amount of sniping. The map could have a number of large building like structures for workers, conveyor lines to move the rock up, processing structures, and huge digging machines towards the center. Add enough of these things to provide plenty of cover on your way down, but leAve gaps so sniping is still possible in a limited capacity.

About the funnel to the center, the terraces should be tall enough to dissuade moving back up, but not so high that you couldn't jump up. Also, the occasional ramp would allow non-jumpers to go up, because we should be allowed to go anywhere on the map at any time, but the general idea should be that it's easier to move toward the center or arround in a ring.

At the center, leave some cover, but give plenty of open space that we can really open up and brawl.

I'm picturing Canyon with a roof.

A strip mine is open air and is essentially a big pit in the ground that progressively gets narrower as it gets deeper. I was trying to describe something unique from all of the other maps. It would probably be the opposite of canyon network in that there would be no trenches at all. One way to imagine it is like a massive stadium filled with mining equipment in which you start in the nosebleeds on opposite sides of the stadium and work your way down to the field or around the sides.

I picked a strip mine over a stadium because it would make sense to be battling over the resources in a mine.

Makes me think of the Impact Site on Planetside 2's Indar continent. Could be fun! One of my favorite places in that game.

A Strip Mine, this sounds interesting for another reason. One of the things I have campaigned for is Ore collection (Open cast mining) This was one of the side objectives in MissionForce Cyberstorm (Dynamix 1996) and enabled you to make an additional earning during a mission.

The way I would see it operating in MWO is very similar to the Cyberstorm implementation. As with Cyberstorm you would be able to add an Ore collector as a Module; the actual mining operation can even be completed during combat by switching the collector on and running through an ore or crystal field.

The image below shows an Ogre (Thor sized unit) approaching the edge of an ore field. (Excuse the graphics, it's now a vintage strategy game)
