The explosion is caused by charged capacitors, and with the charge mechanic the Gauss is no longer is always charged.
It should no longer explode except when fully charged and possibly have a reduced chance to explode during the charge up time.

Actually, this is what I would do, overall, with the Gauss Rifle.

Allow the charge to be held for 5.0s instead of 3.0s.

Have a toggle that lets the user either hold the fire button down for charge and releasing the fire button will fire the Gauss Rifle -OR- clicking the fire button will charge and hold the charge for 5.0s and clicking the fire button again within that charge time will fire.

Fix the Gauss Rifle for chain fire and group fire. When chain firing, clicking the weapon group to fire, if a Gauss Rifle is ready to charge, charge it and don't let the weapon group continue to the next weapon until that Gauss Rifle is back on cooldown. If on group fire, just fire everything in the weapon group and charge up the Gauss Rifle.

If the Gauss Rifle was destroyed with a charge, it's a 100% chance of explosion. If the weapon was destroyed without a charge, it's a 10% chance (normal ammo chance) to explode.
