Each mechwarrior should have a rank that can be seen in game by other teammates. Team lead and
lance lead should automatically go to highest ranking MW. When team leader/lance leader is
killed it should go to next highest players. For premade teams players should have the option
of setting up team leader and lance leaders before dropping.
In game the players unit should be displayed next to the faction name. Player Created Units
for players that are part of a real life unit as well as players that are not aligned with a
real life units.
When a player first starts playing the game he should be assigned the rank of cadet or the
faction appropriate equivalent. Then as the player gains skill by winning games and puts in a
certain amount of time that player should be promoted in rank and transfered to more
prestigious units. The player should have the option of accepting transfers to Game created
units (GCU) or Player created units (PCU).
Each GCU should have a variance of skill levels so that multiple ranks and skills will be
grouped together in units. However as the level of prestige of the unit goes up so should the
overall skill of the players assigned to the unit.
For example Tier 1 Elite Unit
Tier 2 Veteran Unit
TIer 3 Seasoned Unit
Tier 4 Green Unit
TIer 5 Cadet Unit
I think this might even be a more visable way to balance certain aspects of game play. Units from different factions at the same tier level should more or less be balanced.

Most of this is already in the works.
For system-controlled units (Factions), your rank will be determined by the amount of Loyalty Points you have in the current Faction. You will have one rank per Faction. It will be possible (but difficult) to have all six current Factions (Davion, Kurita, Liao, Marik, Rasalhague, Steiner) at maximum Loyalty Point level.
Faction players will be invited into well-known Faction-specific canon units depending on Loyalty Points and achievements. These units will be system-controlled like the Factions. For Marik, an elite example might be the Knights of the Inner Sphere units, and for Kurita it might be the Sword of Light units. There will likely be several levels of units, similar to the tiers you cite.
Well-known canon mercenary units (Wolf's Dragoons, Gray Death Legion, Kell Hounds, etc.) will also be their own system-controlled "Faction" units. They will be invite-only based on achievements. The info we have states that an invite to Wolf's Dragoons might be earned by having maximum Loyalty Points in all six Factions. That might be just part of the requirements though.
If you are in a player-controlled mercenary unit, the Loyalty Points you would normally earn go to the mercenary unit instead -- the unit's rating is more important than your own.
You will be able to change Factions or even join a player-controlled mercenary unit at will. There will be penalties for doing so -- your Loyalty Point totals will slowly decay. For instance, if you join Kurita, your totals for the other five Factions will go down. If you join a player-controlled mercenary unit, all six factions will go down.
Note that it likely won't be mandatory to accept the invites you might get -- you will be able to stay in a certain unit if you happen to like the lore behind it or whatever.
Also note that it doesn't matter what ranks there are in the system-controlled units -- they could have 5000 Captains but only 1000 Lieutenants and 500 Sergeants. Ranks likely won't play a part in matchmaking because they are based on Loyalty Points and not skill directly.

A lot of what you said here makes sense. I like most of it. All except for Loyalty points = Rank. I think loyalty points should be equivalent to Notoriety. Or as in real life military units "Your reputation". Rank should be based solely on skill. Loyalty points does not answer the problem of lack of chain of command in a PUG drop.
