As the title implies I am in the market to get a hero mech primarily for grinding purposes. I already have a com-2d so I really don't want the deaths knell. As of now I have it narrowed to the oxide and the x5. Which should I get and why? (Looking to primarily grind through kill assists and enemy spotting.)

I own and like both very much.

But if you're looking to make c-bills, the Oxide is the best hero there is. XL295, 4SSRM/4tons, BAP. You'll get ridiculous amounts of damage (less kills than assists) and you'll likely pick up spotting and C-ECM assists, too.

That said, 3 of a chassis is quite helpful for improving performance, so TDK should get some consideration, IMO. It is a pretty high-skill mech, but it's a ton of fun.

Wait until after the 4th of Feb.

Rumor has it we get a new 35 ton light Hero mech.

You may find you like it better than what's currently offered.

I love my X5. It's easily my go-to mech when I just want to enjoy the game. I have it spec'ed out as a light hunter, and it's a darn good one at that.

If SRM hit detection was working, I'd say the Oxide. Despite its dependence on ammo, SRMs pack a lot of damage potential, and an SRM 18 Oxide could be really scary...

But, SRM hit detection is bugged to heck and the only alternative for the Oxide is SSRM boating or a tiny LRM boat. If either of those sound like your thing, go for the Oxide. Otherwise, get the X5. It can mount SSRMs just fine and the backup lasers keep you from turning into a wooden duck in an ECM cloud.

They are both right. Wait for Feb. 4th, then decide. Oxcide is exactly what terciel described, but having another commando to elite / master it out wold be helpful also. That is if you like the commando.

I would wait just to see what the new Hero mech is going to be. However, I guarantee you will buy the Oxide. I do not get many kills with the 4 SSRM loadout but tons of damage and assists with C-ECM bonuses. People usually steal my kills after I punish the enemy mech. It is fun and with PGI talking about buffing it it is only going to get better. I also like to run the 4 SRM4 version too. Chainfire them to reduce the SRM hit reg problem and ruin heavy, and assault, mech's days.

Is the new mech likely to be under 3000mc?

Excellent point.

One point in the X-5's favor: it comes mostly ready and you can run it with only minor tweaks. I run mine with an XL320, but the XL330 it includes works.

Oxide comes with a standard engine you'll need to replace with an expensive XL.

All heroes cost 75MC/ton, so it's guaranteed to be.

At its tonnage, most certainly.

Both are pretty bad... Not really sure why you would want either.

For a cicada, the 3M is superior. For a Jenner, the D Variant is better.

Ok ill just wait and see what the new mech is, that seems like a safe bet assuming it could be really good.

Just to make sure, despite it already being mentioned:

Getting 3 of the same chassis and grinding full elite efficiencies (which doubles all basic efficiencies as well) is practically mandatory, if you want to do well in a mech. Especially if your mech of choice is a light. Speed tweak will boost your speed significantly, and double heat management basics, double agility basics as well as quick ignition will save you from many deaths - and greatly boost the amount of damage you can deal.

Maybe you have already grinded through 3 Commandos and decided that 2D is the one you want to keep, but that didn't come clear from your posts. IMO, Knell is easily the best of the Commandos, but requires you to be able to aim and keep the beams on target in high speeds, and some careful heat management.

Oxide is a one trick pony, but at least it does it's streak boating better than any other light. X-5 isn't bad by all means, but not really much different from a regular Jenner D, which is more nimble thanks to JJs. I, too, hope that the next week's hero light will be something worthwhile. :D

The streak Oxide's one trick makes it one of if not the best light (for kiling lights) in the game. After piloting an Oxide since they came out, I'm convinced they're better than the Jenner-F and D now, and I've had those mastered over a year.

I really like the Death's Knell, the Oxide, and the X-5. If you can only get one, I recommend the Oxide. It's a money maker.

Or wait and see what Tuesday brings.

You also have the option of picking up a heavier mech that is on sale. Did you redeem your free Xmas premium time? That would help your grind.

I agree with others, wait and see what develops next week(or today possibly).

TDK is fun and useful. If you only have the 2D, then I'd say get the TDK on sale and pick up a 3A to have a stable of three to elite or master.
However, the Oxide is also a fun ride as listed above; but to get the full potential you'll need two other Jenners, not sure if you have those.
I couldn't decide. So I got both.

The thing is though, when you put skilled pilots in them, the other Jenner variants will probably ruin the Oxide in a one on one fight, because since SSRM's started spreading damage, the other variants' ability to mount lasers actually gives them an advantage in killing light mechs.

This, of course, depends on your ability to actually use lasers effectively. If your gunnery skills are bad, then the Oxide may work better for you, but eventually you'll hit the glass ceiling that comes with using a fairly low skill weapon like streaks.
