Is Team Fortress 2 or whatever poses themselves as modern shooters MMOs? Not truely. Neither is this so far. Massive Matchmaking Online, new genre. The concept posted for persistence is little more than role playing groups on a ladder system / Excel spreadsheet with macros to automatically make a pretty picture. Commentary / updates in the form of newscasts helps add flavor.
My anticipation is high for a Battletech persistent universe but this is not shaping up to be that from what is shown. A great step towards that goal, I can agree with for sure. At least it is a [finally] more proper implementation of Battlemech combat in real time =D
How is MechWarrior: Online an MMO?

It's not an MMO, at least not yet. World of Tanks is an MMO.

In the general definition of each word in the acronym, it fits well.
... unless you're leaking that the bases produce Battle Armor creeps?!!! ;]
Any dev or community manager mind passing on some friendly urging to PR out some of the other aspects of MW:O. We've seen plenty of the combat, 'mech reveals, and finally MechLab. I don't want seem a Negative Nancy because I can only go on what I have seen 'officially'. I'd love be proven wrong and see more of persistent universe in MW:O other than battles, graphs, and commentaries as I ribbed on earlier.

i wouldn´t say so... because a moba is only those few ppl playing in the arena, with no further effect on the universe... in MWO there are those 8-24 ppl playing a match, but (probably) affecting the universe for the masses of player´s...
well as long as we

the OP is clearly thinking of an MMORPG in which hundred-thousands of players can be in the same persistant map. just because the game does not have a persistant world where ingame avatars can interact outside of battle does not mean that it isn't an MMO. I imagine once they get the game out into open beta and they implement the community warfare thing it will very much feel like an MMO.
