As we know only mechs with 3 different variants have been added to the game, the primary reason as far as I can tell is that the mech trees require 3 variants to master a mech. And since UI 2.0 is going to open up the back-end of the game I figured my solution would be a good fix for that problem as this would be back-end UI work.
Example: The Crab, it basically has only 2 real variants but they have pretty much the same hard points so for examples sake will we just say 1 variant for it. So to master the mech all you need to do is triple the amount of mech XP for each efficiency( as if you were working on 3 variants) so any efficiency that costs 1000 XP normally would now cost 3000 XP. This can totally be done and add more unique mechs to the game. If PGI wants they can even make them cost slightly more C-bills or MC for the Hero, I for one would pay it.
I'm sure we can all think of single variant mechs that we want to see in this game, so vote and let PGI know that we want this or not.

The crab easily has 3 variants: ECM, JJ, moar weapons. I get your drift though.
My solution would be to fix the various piloting trees so that you you aren't playing 3 mechs with identical quirks for the soul purpose of regaining the same 13 efficiencies over and over.
If you had global(pilot level) chassis(chassis level) and mech specific efficiencies(something related to a specific chassis like amplifying a mech quirk) Then it'd be easy to do for mechs of another type rather than just doing it over and over for different mechs of the same chassis.
I have 5 fully mastered dragons, I know what repetition is like,
Less tedious grinding and more meta game is the answer.
If you had to do the same amount of grinding for one Venom as for 3 spiders regardless then I'd say that'd be balanced.
