Was just thinking out Halo 3 and Reach, about how they often have a "Community" play list with fun novelty game modes that help break up the monotony of continuous serious matches. Such games modes would be relatively simple to create, but there would still be some work involved.

Here's some ideas I had for some quick fun game modes. Feel free to share yours in the comments:

GRID IRON football.
Setup: Everyone pilots a GRID IRON Hero mech, with each team being appropriately team coloured. There's two goals placed where bases normally are on each map. An object representing the ball is put into play near the centre.

Play: Each team rushes to get the ball and whoever walks over it first is visually marked as the carrier and must get the ball into the opponents base to score a touch down. While carrying the ball you cannot fire any weapons without dropping the ball. If you take X damage within X seconds you drop the ball. If you arms fall off you can no longer carry the ball. You can "fire" the ball at your team mates to pass them the ball. If the ball is dropped any mech can pick it up. The round end when a touchdown is scored in the enemies base zone or when all players on a team are dead.
After each touchdown all mechs are respawned and play continues until X touchdowns or X minutes.

KING OF THE ATLAS
Setup: Everyplayer has an ATLAS equiped for Brawling. The centre of the (any) map is declared as the capture zone. Players are spread evening across the map. No teams, this is a free for all.

Play: Stand in the scoring zone to earn points, even if others are also in the scoring zone. Killing another player while in the scoring zone will grant you a bonus to your points rate. If you die you respawn after X seconds a certain distance from the "hill".
Game ends after any player reaches X points or X minutes has passed.

LIGHT SWARM
Setup: Each player plays a Jenner OXIDE with 1x LRM 5 1x NARC 2x SSRM. All weapons have infinite ammo. No teams, this is free for all.
Play: Just look at that load out, Let people respawn and this would be crazy fun.

JUGGERNAUT
Setup: Every player plays as the MG spider. No teams, everyone gangs up on the Juggernaut

Play: One person is selected to become "The Juggernaut" and immediately turns into an ATLAS. This ATLAS has infinite ammo and never overheats, but is visible to all players at all times. Whoever kills the ATLAS immediate turns into The Juggernaut and become an ATLAS.
Killing the Juggernaut or Killing while being a Juggernaut earns points. Round ends after X points or X minutes has passed.

I would say no Hero mechs and only stock options for the rest. The football field is interesting, but not really lore (pick some in-lore game).

Interesting ideas and worth more thought. Would I expect it to go anywhere? No unfortunately. But it might give them some ideas....

This is so awesome. Too bad it would require much coding and thus won't ever be implemented due to the fact PGI is already behind schedule.

These would all be a lot of fun and a nice break from the usual deathblob game modes. A game select mode of "Casual" could randomly put you into one of those games, no stats or Elo or any of that nonsense. Just mech fun.

Since when has being behind schedule been an issue? They are obviously behind schedule on bug fixes, but do they care? Example: The new glass "upgrade" really fixed a lot of the bugs that have been in the game (and known about) for months. NOT! Ahh... but the glass was more important!

I'm not sure you quite understand what constitutes a lot of work vs something easy...
The window thing is something easy, and isn't much more then a few shaders working together. Entire game mode changes is something completely different.

I'm referring more to the community warfare elements of the game and other similar large changes we're still waiting on, (which is waaaayyy past PGI's hoped deployment schedule).

Personally, for the realm of "simplistic" and "eas[ier] to implement", I think an introduction of a "mutator" mode (with all the current game modes within it) which would go something like this (combinations of these could go together):
  • Satellite recon destroyed - No mechs (friendly or enemy) appear on the minimap
  • Severe lightening - No target information when targetting mechs, no target sharing (except friendly/enemy targetting boxes/arrows as usual)
  • Dust storms - Severely limited visibility {like 50m or so}
  • Clear sky - Visibility increased to 3km
  • Aerospace cover - Enemy mechs show up as blips on radar (when not under cover) every 30secs/1min

Anyway stuff like that, where existing concepts can be modified without as much input as introducing new skins/programming...

I like the idea of using Hero mechs because it also helps to promote them (aka more money for PGI). You wouldn't need to buy a Hero mech to play, but it might convince people to buy them later.

As for it being implemented any time soon? Yeah it's sad but unlikely to happen. A man can dream though!

I like these idea, would love if they could be applied as a random game modifier to normal maps, simply adding more variation to existing game modes.

Simple soccer. Use the locusts because it needs some love. Only one build can enter the match. Have srms on board to kick the ball. Dribble by ramming it. Limit srms range to stop intercepting the ball at 280 meters. Not sure about mech destruction. Either time limit or 3 or so goals.

I was very excited for and then very disappointed by Hawken. When it actually comes down to the combat mechanics it's very basic and no unlike every other shooter ever.

I know MWO is supposed to be super serious and grimdark but as a game it doesn't hurt to have a little variety. And hey, I really like the game mechanics and would love to use them in different ways, but right now all we have is deathmatch.

I think Battlefield-style conquest would benefit this game greatly!

EDIT: I think I meant Rush....it's been a while...

Solaris VII arena would be perfect for such game types. Also, instant action modes with a free mechlab would work perfectly with Solaris.

And king of the hill, ffa, capture the flag, 2v2v2v2, 3v3v3v3, etc.

Basically, any "for quick fun" game mode with respawns. CW, CBills and more serious play can continue with non-respawn modes and the like.
