1- Also stay in a group ... now this group basically is your lance stay with them and don't separate. But what if they leave you clown in all different directions? Simple go run with one of the other lances. By doing so being in a group of 4 or more it helps with spreading the damage among the mechs keeping you alive as well as helping in focus firing because the more mechs you have the more likely you are to have been shooting the same target (unless you are using a VOIP to talk to each other then it is easy to call out targets).
2- Always and I MEAN ALWAYS! Have some one one bigger then you in-front ... so for example, if your in a medium mech make sure you have a heavy in-front of you so you don't get focused at as quickly as if you where out in the lead. BUT CLOWN!!!! Yes yes what if you are an atlas? or for that part the biggest thing in the group? Well example then goes make sure you are in a group that out weighs you. So never have an atlas running with 3 Spiders why because 3 x 25 = 75 and that is less then 100 tons. So refer back to tip 1 and make sure their weight class is conducive of an assault (heavies and mediums and other assaults).
3- Never sell an engine! I know many have come to pass going but I really need the next mech to help grind out the master but lets face it keep your engines because there will always be another mech that needs that engine down the line. Reason for this is also is you take a major hit and you probably will have to buy it back later costing you more C-Bills in the end. (Actually try to never sell anything except maybe the stash of growing medium lasers ... I have found mind reaching 50 once or twise, but I have never sold an engine).
Break time ... those three tips are basics for any new mech pilot to follow because the first two help you stay alive longer which helps you earn more C-Bills and the third is a tip in keeping C-Bills in your pocket (I have heard many issues about game meta and these three tips help you if you do not have premium account).
4- Heat management, now that you can kill yourself because of it always keep it in mind. Try to make builds above 1.20 until you get the hang of the heat management physics or unless you are a light mech with a flamer. Reason for this is if you are learning about controlling heat and you keep getting stuck on the volcano or desert having your 1.20 Heat EFF will still be a challenge but easier to learn with. (So in other words tip for new players try and keep your heat eff above 1.20 until you understand more about it.)
5- Reverse turn! If you are in that assault mech that drives like your first car (usually a boat made in the 70s all metal body and a BLEEP to turn). This tip will help you kill that light mech who is taking advantage of your mech. First throw your mech in full reverse and then turn which way you need so you can turn quicker (its not much but in a game of inches as Al Pacino would say it counts up).
6- Weapons ... to alpha or to dps? Well a good rule of thumb is to neither. Let me explain: There will be times you need a good 15 to 20 damage shot to kill the mech or you will need that constant 5 damage over time to keep them off balance and to help manage your heat. So best way to combat this is chain fire and alpha fire keys so if you have 6 medium lasers have one button to alpha them and another set on chain fire. By switching between the two will help keep you alive longer in a brawler situation. What if you are not a brawler but an lrm support, clown? Well same thing usually though lrms fire in chain fire to start (or at least good mech pilots do) and then if they see an opening they will fire everything at once to pop the mech in a killing blow (this also is to help the missile boats manage heat if you are firing multiple lrms 10s, 15s, or 20s).
7- PPCs, ERPPCs, and AC20s build tip. Usually you don't see the 6 PPC build anymore that melts a mech in one shot because now it kills you, but you do see the dual AC20 or an AC20 and 2 PPCs, but how are they managing their heat? Simple they have one button for each weapon. So for example, Ac20 in weapon group 1, PPc in weapon group 2, and PPC in weapon group 3. By doing this they can alpha but also cycle through their weapons as needed to help manage their heat. (Poptarts usually use this setup for a 50 alpha but if played correctly can be a 15 dps as well for a good few seconds.)
8- You usually play a heavy or assault but trying your hand at a light? Well usually the first thing you note is no armour but a LOT of speed, right? Well then this tip is simple, run. Yep that's it keep running because the second you stay still in 500 meters of an enemy mech is usually when you lose a leg or your life. But clown what if you are a snipe light? Ok then ... should you be 500 meters of the enemy? No because a ER Large or ER PPC has a range out to 1,000 out side of that keep running when you are with in 500 meters.
9- Tag, should i even bother? Well it depends because if you are trying to grind for cash a tag and ER Large are your friend. Tag bonus and Kill Assist bonus add up. You tag and an lrm hits the enemy when you are tagging him it gives you a bonus for each time a wave hits adds up real fast and your lrm boat will be happy. Now as for the ER Large gives you range to scrap a mech ... so shoot every mech just once counts! No matter if it is just a little damage and if you get the kill even better but not required. Now on top of all those bonuses you get from kill assist and tag you also get spotted assist by just looking at the enemy when lrms are also coming in even if you don't have him tagged (you just get more with the tag).
Another break (a clown should never work to hard otherwise he be given responsibilities). So the last 6 tips have basically gone over a lot of stuff; heat, heavy and assault play, light play, bonuses, poptart, and alpha and/or chain fire.
10- Last tip I give to you. Find a group of people to play with, some that you get along with. By doing so you can have more fun grinding and enjoy this game while you are waiting for key features. There are threads in the MWO forums over TS servers and websites of gaming clubs for MWO by doing so you hopefully will stay for the long haul.
As for being a clown I can't help myself but hopefully these tips one or two help you enjoy this game a little more. Also if you like join me in skye-rangers.net and I can hopefully give you some more help if needed.
