We all know that animating fully-articulated arms for MWO Mechs is probably too expensive and time-consuming to be practical.

We also know that the fixed arm position for many Mechs causes tactical complications. Cataphracts have to take more exposed positions, for instance, because of the low position of their arms, and the inability of the burly Atlas to even lift its arms is so comical it's even been the topic of a NGNG cartoon.

But there is a middle ground here that should be more easily implemented by PGI and offer a a more versatile and enjoyable experience for the pilots of many Mech models who've found themselves forced to climb over a hill too far too many times.

Give the currently low-fixed arms two fixed positions, all the way up or all the way down. No middle ground. This could be controlled with a single assigned keystroke.

With the Clans and their massive firepower coming, anything that lets Inner Sphere Mechs make better use of terrain and cover is worth looking at.

A raise-arm toggle would be fine with me. It'd be similar in some ways to a crouch toggle in how handy it'd be, and might well be easier for PGI to implement.

I don't think such an option would help the game any. If i could raise my CTF-4x's arms to shoulder height, you can guarantee that the unarmed 'Mechs would then become worthless, since the Armed 'Mechs would have all the benefits of both arm styles. It would turn my Dakkaphract into a slightly heavier Jagermech. And thats not a good thing.

Currently, Theres a tactical difference to how you play a 'Mech with and without Arm Actuators. As a CTF, i take advantage of tall cover to only expose one Arm/Torso at a time while still firing.
As a Jager, i can't do that, But i can take advantage of hills and short cover to nuke taller 'Mechs on the other side. Thus my arm actuator 'Mechs are at a disadvantage in hilly terrain, but have the advantage in urban terrain, as well as greater aim mobility in close quarters.
Give me an option to raise my arms to shoulder height, and i am now at the advantage in both types of terrain, Since in the hilly terrain, i can Block torso damage AND still fire over cover.
