I built an illegal JM6-S by accident. I put on Endo Steel, Ferro Fibrous, 2xAC/2, 2xAC/5, Beagle, 4 tons of AC/2 ammo and 3 tons of AC/5. It should not have been possible to equip an XL engine, but I was able to put an XL285 in and make several drops. It wasn't until I tried to change the build that I discovered I had -2 free slots.
