I know that the pack hasn't launched yet, and I also know the asthetic differences between the mechs WHat I am trying to ask is what are the different roles of the mechs.

I have read the wiki info on them but as a person with limited mechwarrior experience I don't really understand their roles.

Thanks, in advance.

We don't know yet, because we don't know what the builds and features are, because they said to wait until they officially launch Operation: Inception later today. Once it launches, we will have all the information we need. Until then, they are holding their cards close to the vest.

The role of the 'Mech will be the one you chose for your avatar.

You can play however you like. However scouting with an assault will be hard.

Assualts make great scouts...
Great firepower speed can be upped
But a 100 ton assualt is a BIG waste of resourses

Not sure if a match will be tonnage limited or not
If they are then...
Don't bring me a 100 ton scout and try to play on my team

Jenner is a light mech with high speed, good for scouting and light skirmish.
The Hunchback is a medium mech with a powerful AC/20 in its stock configuration with good armor but slow speed. It is a good brawler mixing it up at close ranges though its armor is lacking when facing larger more powerful mechs built for the same role.
The Catapult is a heavy mech, meant for long range support with its LRM's also backed by 4 medium lasers makes it ok at close ranges as well also with jump jets affording it increased manuverability despite its slower speed.
The Atlas.. well its the Atlas. meant to stomp folks and bring pain wherever it goes. It is slow, heavily armored and armed and most effective at close ranges though its LRM racks allow it to contribute at longer ranges.

That is a quick off the top of my head for these mechs.

Note not one mech can fill all roles completely. Pilot skill comes into effect on all chassis.

Will be interesting seeing what possible variants are allowed or specified for the given Mechs, or what sort of any potential bonuses or upgrades they come with.

I would not be surprised however if they are just the 4 stock variants of the Mechs, though.

You can liken their roles to other games with varying classes that are related to size. As am extremely rough comparison, the Jenner would be like the scout in TF2, the hunchback like the soldier or pyro, the catapult might be like the demoman or sniper, and the atlas like the heavy.

the Sarna wiki doesn't give explicit role explanations and indeed many mechs fulfill several. you can piece it together for yourself though, for instance the catapult's primary weapons are LRMs, which you would know from looking up in Sarna that those are long range missile launchers. if those are primary weapons, the most obvious role for catapult is long range bombardment.

Edit: posting with smartphone = ninja'd lol
