Planetside 2 while NOT on the cryengine was based off of it. They built it from scratch after looking at cryengine.

1.Cryengine 3 has an wesome editor
2.Crytek stated they want to focus on f2p games, so i´d guess they´re curious about how mwo will work out and made good offering
3. the engine is focused on big scale and large terrain, which is what mwo needs.
4. the hardwarescaling is pretty well for a high end engine - unreal 3 may be a little bit better but crytek has optimized a lot since crysis (ce2). crysis 2 needs less hardware performance than crysis 1
5. even by today standards crysis 1 (2007!!!) which uses its engine predecessor is still one of the most beautiful games ever created.
6.mwll´s awesome graphics and (for a free mod !) well functioning.
that being said, most of those points are equally valid for ue3, but i´m glad theres some competition in regards of game engines. and cryengine 3 is definately a good fit for a title like mwo.
best regards

completely sick of that engine, especially considering it does not scale up to modern technologies like cryengine 3 does.

good points, the crytek statement did cross my mind so my gues is maybe they offerd their engine for free, anyways...
and handling large scales is also part of unreal(the damn tribes maps are too big and have you seen APB maps? driving a mech throu those would be a fun challenge)
Maybe i just got too used to Unreal running things that i cant imagine anyone else trying to run the show....

When you actually play a Cryengine 3 game, and take time to actually look at the water, youll quickly realize its the best water in a game youve ever seen. Thats just one thing that Cryengine does better than most other engines.
And i hate to burst your bubble, but... but water is kinda shiny...

Seriously. The tech demo at E3... i thought maybe it was a video from 2 or 3 years ago. The only great looking thing was the rocks crumbling. Everything else looked... meh.
