Dying from ammo explosions. However i know my Mech is properly cased with my ammunition nowhere near the engine. I am fielding a Catapult mech, and the ammo is in the arms slots with the LRMs, (both torso sides cased)
It could also be: I am losing a side torso (XL engine), and rather than registering death by the side torso loss, it is improperly registering it as an ammo explosion (maybe since the arm is dstroyed with the side torso, where the ammo is), but this is conjecture.
It is just confusing as to how the death is actually registered. But i am positive due to my build i should never die to an ammo explosion. I should be killed by simply good old fashioned "I got face-melted by 3 Atlas's" damage... lol.

CASE does nothing to protect XL engine builds.
Ammo explosions travel inward from the arm to the side torso, and CASE prevents it from moving into the center torso. But your XL engine is destroyed in the sidetorso area, hence, death by ammo explosion.

What MrBlonde42 said.
CASE = useless for XL-builds.
When a full ton of LRM-ammo explodes it does 198 points of damage to your 'mech.
First it applies that damage to your remaining arm-internals, as your armor there has already been stripped or it wouldn't be possible to trigger an ammo-explosion.
That only reduces those 198points of damage by 20 or less(the maximum internal structure points you COULD, but probably don't have, as you've been damaged already).
Once that arm is destroyed all the excess damage (178or more) goes to your side-torso.
Even if you side-torso hasn't been scratched yet and you put all armor to your front, that can only take 90damage points before it is destroyed.
Now CASE will stop any further damage-transfer to your CT, wich would still be 88 or more points.
That's still enough to strip all your front armor and damage your internals but if you had a standard engine you would/could survive (even without CASE if your CT is not damaged too badly).
Sadly, because of your XL-engine it's already too late for that, as your side torso already blew up.
