First, we need to remove champion mechs from the trial rotation. Second, up the trial mech count to 6, maybe 8.
Then, add in a Stock Mech game mode. Forced random gametype (newbies need to learn each one). Only mechs available are the trial mechs (which will all come in stock configuration).
This gives newbies a nice safe zone to learn the game in, and vets can come in and play just for fun, without having the ability to completely steamroll the newbs. It'd be a nice challenge for the vets to have to work with unoptimized builds, and also adds a bit of flavor, using mechs as they were intended in the BattleTech universe.
After that, you need to have the other game modes locked for trial mechs. You have to actually own a mech to participate in those.
I've been playing since back in Closed Beta when we only had 4 mechs to play with, and couldn't customize them, and the game was still fun to play even under those conditions. I'd play the hell out of a stock mech mode.
