I wanted to check on MWO again after a year, mostly out of curiosity (and a possibility it might die soon).
The launcher wants me to download unforeseeable multitude of gigabytes in 44 updates so I thought I'll check here for state of things 1st. (to prevent DLading for a day and then getting pi**ed in 1st match just like year ago ;)

So can you tell me kindly if anything got better or worse in the time ?

Like:
Is this still LightWarrior (and nobody can even think of winning against Jenner whos happily rubber-banding around) ?
Or is there a new flavor-of-the-month hack(s) that makes game miserable for most people ?
Is the (infamous) 3PV abused a lot ? Is it still possible to have a good game in 1PV while not being a MWO pro ?
Bugs or glitches in the game ?
Is it still as slow as it was year ago ?

Thanks a lot for info / warnings

HSR solved a lot of the issues with fast moving mechs (and they increased the max speed from 153 to over 170 as a result). Rubber banding isn't nearly as much of an issue.

3PV is never used, and a complete non-issue as anyone with half a brain foresaw.

A few bugs, but nothing even remotely gamebreaking. Issues now like the turrets causing the target designation of mechs to change (echo turning to india and the like).

The game is not a twitch shooter where the first person to hit you in the big toe with a gun from 1km away gets the kill. You have to whittle down your opponents, just like always. If you're looking for CoD, go play CoD?

Oh, and the full game is under 4GB, so it shouldn't take too long for anyone with a decent internet connection. Plus, they released UI 2.0 finally, so the major roadblock that was preventing progress has been removed. The game is far less likely to die now than it was a year ago.

Thanks a lot for info Heffay. I'll try it then.

"The game is not a twitch shooter .."
How did you get the idea that I was looking for twitch shooter ? ;) I'm actually a long time fan of MW games (back to EGA graphic era ) and was always lookng for something strategical (ei. not Hawken).
Sadly for me MWO is PvP and MMO which is worst combination for me, but thats a different story.

BTW So the circle-strafing-to-death is gone now ? (hard to believe)

Yup. Well, you can try it, but it's probably not a good strategy. The current meta (which will be fixed soon) is jump-jetting snipers with pin-point damage, but PGI has a plan to tweak it. However, the depth of the game is far greater than it was a year ago, with a number of modules that can help your particular play style out. Information and Role warfare is far greater than it was in the past, and hopefully with these upcoming tweaks (including a much needed NARC buff), the game will become that much more robust.

I see you a big fan of the game and I wish you it become all you want it. Though from both my professional experience and gamer experience I don't see it becomming a great game.

The old circle strafing is gone to a point, I would say a more circle 8 pattern works better.

No more charging the other team with the Raven 3L and watch them run in Fear. After a few AC 20's and other stuff all at once kinda made that a suicide tactic.

They introduced ghost heat for certain weapon systems so there are no more 6 PPC Stalkers, or 6 LL boats. Missiles also got nerfed with ghost heat. So the splat cats or streak cats are not seen as much.

One thing the ghost heat did do was make more use of different weapon systems on a mech. There are times people brave the ghost heat just to do it, others well we live in it.

There were changes to C=bill awards and XP, they are less now and more ways to earn them. There are now spotting assists, tag/narc bonuses. ECM assists, defeating ECM, UAV spotting and assists. So a 20 ton locust with one ER Large laser and TAG can get behind the other team, launch a UAV to let the LRM boats target them and run back hid under something (surprising what a locust can crawl into.) Then start to tag the enemy team while sniping each one with the ERLL for kill assists. Well until someone blows on it and kills it.

There are new maps, I think Alpine you did not see, Tremoline desert, Crimson Straits, and HP manifold. Also for Conquest watch out for the LRM 10 and 2x ML turrets on River city and Crimson straits.

Lights have their place, but so do Medium mechs with all the 55 toners we have now.

Wow, Barkem thanks for exhaustive description.

Is there a working ingame voice chat now ?
Did the PUGs get any better (ei not a bunch of headless chicken against 6 elites etc) ?

Nope. I didnt mean to troll, if thats what you mean.
I ment it in a honest way. If it got across badly, please excuse me. English not being my 1st language is to blame here I guess.

Honestly though, and nothing pesonal, I dont have a good opinion about the game or its developers.
(I can explain why, but dont really mean to start a flame here or anything, so lets leave it at that. Any way, it is only my own opinion.)

Due to adding the ELO system, if you get a bunch of headless chickens on your team, it is because the game thinks YOU are the Elite.

Think about that before complaining about it :P
(Note: not saying you are, but if you do....)

Im not an elite by any means.
Im generaly very bad in any (realtime) pvp and always been. :P Though not a headless chicken (or simply idiot). Just bad reflexes / clumsy
(You can imagine how dissapointed I was when I found out I waited 10 years for new MW game, just to be PvP only ) (Thats not why I have low opinion of it though)

There are times in PUG, AUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Other times where I have been giving out words or directions like Let me see the map and who is where before I decide. Then some one say, take command and put it on the map. These times are golden, and some times we loose, other well it is a PUG stomp by PUGs.

The one thing on terra therma is never just go into the caldera. it is a death trap. I had a team set up in one valley with a defense in depth to draw the other team in to the kill zone. Then since I was the only Medium mech my name was bait. Ran up in shot a few ML's and LRMs and ran back. The most unnerving thing to do to the other team is prevent contact. They come running when you do that, right into the kill zone.

I wish there was in game chat, or a drop box to talk before a drop. Sometimes I do not, due to some people trolling other or when you get that AC 40 team killing son of a b>&^% on your team that gets three enemy kills along with 7 team members. There will be people playing with sub 20fps or ones with on Wifi that some issues and some idiot will just start lighting into them if not attacking them. In part of the launch event last fall they did show what they wanted and they just got the licence extended till 2018. So unless someone is thinking of closing up shop after the clan launch and running for a pacific island to hide on for the rest of his life, this game should be running for 4 more years.

Also it is 12 v 12 now

yeah licences blah, fact is, the only thing this long license really does, is to prevent us from playing a good MW in close future... maybe 2020 is a new chance, but i think we will run in real mechs before we get virtual mechs in a good game. i shit on F2P, u want fun, pay for it, thats the most simple rule on this planet, i would rather pay for a non f2p than being betrayed by these guys on and on, nice visions, but they should have written a book instead.... maybe a mw fairytale?

hmmm, i got 2 qualms with this

1. even tho MWO did shut down MLL, MLL didn't have the potential of becoming anymore than what it was. when i played LL i wasn't satisfied at all. it wasn't the MW experience i felt when i played MW2, and i dont think any MW game will take the place of MW2 but that was a finished game MWO isn't even close to hitting the ceiling. Think of the game as potential energy, so far we only got a little of the kinetic energy but their is still loads of potential left. That doesn't mean it will be achieved so we must wait and see.

2 "being betrayed by these guys on and on, nice visions," we weren't betrayed at all my good sir, we have a vision of what MWO should be and so do the devs, remember their ppl just like us(or aliens) and have their own visions of MWO but it is also influence by the community and outside influences. also its great this game is F2p that just means its open to everyone and anyone has a chance to try it out and pay for things if they like the game.

At 1st my bigest problem with this game (a year ago and since now) was it wasn't a game, but a tech demo.
Now I played it after a year and have to say its a lot more polished and has a bit more content.
But my 2nd bigest problem still remains: its a freaking Deadmatch :[
When I heard years ago that somebody picked up a MW licence I imagined coop campaign game. Game like MW2.
And I got Quake3.

We were planning (well mostly dreaming), with couple of my old game dev mates, to try create our own MW-clone PC game. Mostly out of pure desperation from waiting forever for game like that.
But nobody has stamina for kickstarting and managing a huge project like that to completion anymore.
(Im talking and talking again, sorry for that :P)

Anyway, I see a lot of mech games popping up lately - Hawken, TitanFall, Heavy Gear - but all of them go the same way - simple PvP and thats it. (Plus some look like they have no chance to even survive to beta.)
Dont really understand why everybody has to join the deadmatch movement.

Well, i gotta say it again, this game has potential. I really cant make a proper analysis until CW comes out, because that when we will see what this game can do. shoot, ive waiting 10 years for a MW game i can at least wait another year. I wonder what things would be like if money wasnt a factor? oh well. i feel that i might get my game, this could have been another Battlefront 3 but at least it arrived at the gates

My guess is that if money wasnt a factor, the d**ks at Microsoft would leave the MW licence in theyr locker to rot forever. ;]

More seriously though, if you want to see what things are like when money arent a factor, you can look at MWLL: much better game, much faster done and without bull*** you at least once a month :P

They fixed the light lagshield so they don't dominate as much anymore. This isn't really that gamebreaking, but people now like to complain about poptarting with PPCs. 3PV wasn't as devastating as people thought it would be. The game is glitchy and buggy as hell. Not as, but still enough that you will bug out every 8 games or so.
