As a pilot with over 1 million XP past mastery on my Awesomes combined, I would recommend not brawling in them. They do have good torso twist and twist speed for an assault, but they're so wide and so slow that you just don't have the armor to last long in a fight. Add to this the complete lack of ballistic hardpoints and jumpjets combined with the atrocious netcode on SRMs at the moment and you will be easily outclassed by every single brawling Victor and Atlas on the battlefield.

If you really want to get in close, I'd recommend taking the 9M with a 380XL engine, which gives you the speed and maneuverability to get behind and stay behind the Stalkers and Atlases at least; the Victors can pull off the same trick but with jumpjets as well, however, so they still have you beat. Your other option is the AWS-8R with 4x SRM6 + 2x LLAS/PPC, which should be a devastating combo, but the broken SRM netcode right now means you will frequently land 24 SRMs dead on a target for no damage or almost no damage. Personally, if you do run the 8R with SRMs, I'd say stick with PPCs instead of lasers; they are much better for plinking away at your enemies early in the game, and when people get close just switch off to the SRMs exclusively; firing that many SRMs with the large lasers as well is just asking to overheat.

If you are absolutely invested in using the 8V as a brawler, ditch the medium pulse lasers for regular mediums. The 180m range on the pulses means you're going to be doing more damage with the mediums at most ranges anyways, and for less heat and less weight. The shorter beam duration on the pulse lasers doesn't actually help most players land more of their shot on target anyway- right now, I can't recommend pulse lasers for anyone on any build. If you lose the AMS as well, you can use the freed weight to max out your armor and add two more tons of SRM ammo- and on that build, you're really going to need as much ammo for the SRMs as you can get, since most of your firepower is bound up on those three launchers, and 18 tubes of SRMs can chew through ammo at an alarming rate.
