Can the Cicada X5 utilise 6 medium lasers like the Cicada 2A(C) can? I love the 2A(C)'s weapon setup and I wouldn't want to sacrifice that if I purchased an X5 instead. Thanks in advance.

the X5 has 4 energy hardpoints and 2 missile hardpoints and comes with a xl330 engine. It is a nice set up, but it will not be able to do the set up you are looking for.
good luck

It is highly recommended to get three of any chassis you invest in because the efficiencies depend on it. For the Cicada, the best variants are the -3M, -X-5 and then probably the -2A. However, if what you want is a pile of MLs that move quickly, the JR7-F and forthcoming FS9 do that better. Smaller, faster, JJ.
Also, if you're new, be sure you're running your free premium time during your cadet bonus so you can buy something more easily when it's done. You're never going to see c-bill income like this again, multiply it while you can.

Side note: The X5 is the only mech without an AMS hardpoint.

Also note that the 2A© only has an XP boost, but the X-5 has a boost. In the long run a Hero mech and two regular c-bill variants (like a regular non-champ 2A) might serve you better. The regular 2A can always bring the identical loadout as the 2A©

While on the subject of earning C-Bills, that X5 with 3ML, TAG, 2SSRM2 and BAP is like a magical CBill printing machine once you get comfy in it Rack up those C-ECM bonuses and targeting assists then go hard later in the game and start mopping up your damaged foes ;P

If your going to spend MC, get the x5
The champion build can be replicated for cbills with the regular version.

The Cicada 3A(C) is just a cash only, pre-upgraded version of the Cicada 3A which is available for cbills (points you earn in the game as a non-real currency).
Cicadas are dirt cheap to buy with the game's points (cbills) and as such between the two I'd say the X-5 is better. It gives you a 30% bonus.

I have been playing Cicadas lately, including the X5. I like it a lot and have some good rounds with it.
When it comes to med lasers, 4 can be just as good as 6 because of heat and aiming and such. And you get streaks (or another missile weapon) in the X5. Don't be afraid to experiment with different weapons. You can do different loadouts like 2 large lasers, 2 er large lasers, 1 large laser and 2 med lasers, sm pulse lasesrs, ppc and med lasers, etc. etc. etc. Don't think you can only run a cicada with med lasers (though a solid choice. I consider the med laser to be the "baseline" laser weapon. Moderate firepower, moderate heat, moderate range, light weight)

The X-5 is a bigger version of the Raven 3L without the ECM jamming. The 4 Med Lasers can still pack a punch if you are coming from the 6 Laser builds. Also fitting Streaks will boost your dueling potential verse fast Mechs.
