so I started playing yesterday. In fact I wondered if I should play Hawken and so I watched Let´s Play Videos on Youtube for both Hawken and MWO. So far I am happy I decided to give MWO the benefit of the doubt.

I really enjoy the game so far. the battles are fast paced enough you can easily do a couple in a short time and simply log off afterwards. you don´t waste HOURS for things to actually happen (hello EVE online which I played for close to 6 years)
yet the outfitting and such gives enough options to tinker around for hours and get yourself lost in to.

I also like the fact that it´s F2P...

I have been playing MMO´s for about 10 years now and this combination is exactly what I was looking for.

anyways. after playing yesterday I do have some stuff that I noticed:

the good:

1. the players seem to be nice. its something I never encounterd as much in a MMO. of course it´s hard to type while also walking / shooting and such, but even after people get "cored" i have yet to see a "&&$&/% NOOB" in chat.

this and this alone makes it a game to enjoy loggin into. i hope I am not mistaken....,

the bad:

1. the new mechlab looks nothing like in the tutorials. outfitting the Mechs is a major PITA.

2. the game (at least for me itz was yesterday ) was very unstable. its great that all settings happen on the server, but when every loadout and screen-change happens to send the client into a loading screen loop of infinity, it gets old very fast

I can only imagine how effective a team of 6-12 with TS would be.
might have to revive my TSserver sooner or later :-)

thx and looking forward for more days of capital carnage

You can just jump into any of the public TS servers we have:
http://mwomercs.com/...e-chat-servers/

That thread has most of them.

Also, try lowering your resolution or graphics details a bit. For me the game runs real smooth. Except for when loading the social tab. That one just takes forever (I have about 200+ friends).

I don't know if the videos covered this, but as a new player you get 1 day of premium time for free. Also your first 25 matches include a cadet bonus that on it's own totals up to between 9 to 10 Mil C-Bills. If you activate premium time at the same time, you can maximize your profit and get something along the lines of 15-20 Mil.

I would also like to extend the invitation to drop with you if you ever need a drop partner.

Other than that, I look forward to seeing you on the battlefield. Have fun, and let the mech destruction roll! XD.

Welcome to MWO, the greatest horribly broken game ever. You will have lots of fun, but also plenty of frustration.

Your issue may be one of the bugs reported with the new setup. As for performance, use the global Low or Medium setting -- the advanced sliders do not work properly, and you can select Very High by accident.

Tomorrow's patch should improve the UI a lot -- it was just introduced two weeks ago, and continuous additions/fixes are planned. You happened to join at an especially unfortunate moment.

Love that you are looking for the good things about it. there will always be bad things, but the good things are enjoyable and that's what a game is. There is some trash talk in the chat, mostly from dead players who are frustrated, but there are also lots of people who really want to play together and that piece is what makes this game amazing to me. The forum isn't necessarily a normal part of game play, but the guys here in the forums love talking about MWO and are personable and engaging. This is another piece of the game that is very entertaining. Set yourself up to get emailed notices on forum topics you're interested in (such as New Player) ... you will be surprised at the things you can learn by listening to other people's frustrations and their offered solutions.

And ... playing with even one other person is terrific and really enhances the in-game. Take someone up on offers of a drop partner! Enjoy.

Welcome aboard!

Our community can still be fractious and offensive (mostly on the forum and less so in-game), but compared to many other online games I've played we're comparitively respectful and helpful.

The entire UI was replaced two weeks ago. There is a NEW mechlab tutorial

http://www.youtube.c...e&v=ywKefWlrz-Q

Server issues were common yesterday, I suspect the bad weather across the Eastern seaboard over then weekend is at fault. This happens every once in a while but is not a daily/weekly problem.

If you have any other questions, please let us know!

Configuring mechs with the new UI is quite tedious, we kinda just have to suck it up and wait a patch or few for them to get around to some of the usability issues the community has responded with.

Psykikk,

First off, welcome to the game. I'm a long time MW player too. I've taken polls in game chat and the average age of players in this game is much older than most. I think that maturity level makes the game play different as you've noted. MW is an old title and it attracts a lot of players in their 30s and 40s, mostly 40s.

Be patient with the UI 2.0. It will get better. Customizing a mech shouldn't be this hard. It will get easier.

I run the game on an i5 second gen processor, nVidia GTX-650ti 1 GB video card, and 8 GB Ram. Stability is good for me at the High video settings, but can get choppy at very high. So I just set at High and leave it. Hope this helps some in sorting out your stability issues.

Welcome to MWO!

Jody

According to Vblog#2, the mechlab will get a smurfy style update in the near future. At first it will only be an overview page but eventually editing from that page will be available.

Smurfy setup, demonstrating the Dragon trial mech. (Actual smurfy.)

Note that this game is very processor heavy rather than graphics heavy. Dual cores can have some trouble. I personally run a quad core. Laptops need some serious cooling power to be able to play for any lengthy periods.

Welcome to the Mechadrome...

MWO is the very definition of the Good the Bad and the ugly but its a fun game none the less, stick around and broswe the guides and as others have said hop on the voice client of your choice and I think you will find the community even friendlier than the chat might suggest!

See you on the battle field...

For Video settings, set everything to Medium and work your way up, the sliders are all messed up and dont act like they should. For mech setups and builds checkout mechspecs.com and mwo.smurfy-net.de.
Come checkout www.nstalkers.com or stop by our TeamSpeak @ ts.nstalkers.com.
New pilots are always welcome and we have lots of knowledge, experience as well as lots of fun!
Night's Scorn usually get 12s going thursdays nights ~10pm est, fridays and saturdays. 12s are a completely different beast.

Just noticed you cant use the PM system,

If you know how you can add me in MWO to your friends list and the next time I'm on I will look to drop with ya.

thx for the freindly welcomes guys.
the bad performance was ONLY during the mechlab views, never in game. I played in FullHD with max settings and it was smooth as pie. (having spent on my rig afew months earlier was a good move...)

so I gather the timing of the UI on my part is bad, as well as chosing a day with server problems on my first day. apart from that. it was fun. and since the matches are fast enough, it doesnt feel like a grind at all to get my credits.

I bought two mechs yesterday and will see how I can get them to annoy the hell out of whomever I will face :-)

thx guys. looking forward to see you ingame.

ps.: I also read that spectating increases payout. its also fun to see how others fare and a greta way to learn stuff.

Vercinix's guide will help you improve your game. It is a recommended read, and it contains links to further helpful resources.

You earn Cbills for assists as long as you stay in the match. If you spectate while anyone finishes a mech you damaged, that is additional income compared to leaving early. But the main reason to do it is to learn the tactics and loadouts of other players. Be aware that spectating is not 100% synchronized to lower the server load -- you will often see people missing when in fact they are getting good shots in (watch the reticule turn red, that is the actual indicator).

Spectating by itself does not increase your payout. There is signifcant confusion over how Assists are paid if you die part-way through a match and enemies you assisted are killed after you leave (I'm still trying to get someone at PGI to give me a clean answer one way or the other)

Spectating can be a great way to lern some new tricks, as well as to get a feel for mechs you might like to play later on :)
