you need to unlock the basics on 2 other kintaro variants to start unlocking elites.

It means you will have to unlock basic on 2 more kintaros, KTO-20 and KTO-19 in your case. If you want to unlock master for your KTO-18 you will have to unlock elite on all those variants I mentioned.

To get access to the Elite level, you need to unlock everything at the Basic level for 3 variants of one mech (3 different Kintaros in this case). To get access to the Master level, you need to unlock all Elite level skills for 3 variants in a weight class (3 different medium mechs in this case).

This is the simplest way it can be said:
  • you need 3 variants of the same mech with Basics complete to unlock Elite.
  • You need 3 mechs of the same weight class with elite complete to unlock Master.
you will always need 3 variants of each mech in order to progress. You will always need to complete the basics on all 3 in order to progress. You need to complete 3 Elite in order to get to master, but those 3 may be of different chassis types in the same weight class.

A note on the master level, the 3 of the same weight class can be all the same chassis, they don't have to be different kinds of mechs. This part is implied but not usually stated and I feel it should be in case someone gets the wrong idea.

PS: Congrats on buying the best Kintaro first, bar none. The KTO-18 is where it's at.. 5 Streaks and some Medlas is awesome.

That said, the answers given to you are correct so far. You need to own three 'mechs to rank them up, with the weight class mastery working as described above.

Lastly, the KTO-19 and KTO-20 have different feelings toward them, and while many would argue that the Golden Boy is useless, it's a hero mech that can grind 30% cash bonus and count as an additional variant, but requires MC and again many would argue against it due to the slowness.

This man speaks the truth. The KTO-GB gains an energy slot over your current Kintaro, but in trade, turns slower, accelerates slower, has less torso twist range, etc. It's a horrible 'mech.

This. The cheapest way is to buy 3 variants (Kintaros in your case) and get all the Elite skills on them. Then in the future any other mediums you can just buy one mech, get the Basics, sell it, buy the 2nd, etc. Then buy the one you really want and take it all the way to Master if you want. ;)

The thing is that there is just nothing going for it, but if the OP wants, then he can go ahead and get it, it can still work as a grind mech to get cash and purchase something after the Kintaro.

GOLDENBOY = BAD!
If ya want a HERO mech pick up the Ilya Mumblemets, probably the most versitile mech in the game. The Victor Dragon Slayer is also a kick-ass HERO mech.
My two cents.
I own the IM, FLAME, X-5, and the FIREBRAND HEROs.
