Not really a new player but as this seems to be the place to ask details....
Is heat damage when heat shutdown override is on, and you are over 100% heat, higher than when you just shutdown and wait to power up, and if it is by how much?
And second, if damage while shutdown is lower, after being overriden and still over 100% if you manually shutdown do you change the damage rate back to lower?
Basicaly this is when playing lights and you wanna finish a mech but you know it will put you in the red you override, finish the target, and run back in to cover while taking heat damage so if you manually shutdown in the safety of cover does it reduce the damage you will take?

Heat damage should be the same, based on how high the heat meter goes.
However, if you override and are still in motion, the heat generated by movement means you will be hotter and be hot for a longer amount of time than if you were standing still.
If there is a difference in dissipation when shut down, it would be a different story. If I find something to the contrary I'll pop back.

There's a few things to remember.
When on, the engine itself generates heat. Just by simply being on it reduces your cooling as it's constantly being 'held back'. How much heat you get just for being powered up (say 5% while stationary on Caustic as an example) tells you a combination of both ambient temperature (represented by increasing/decreasing cooling and maximum threshold) and engine heat.
When cooling at any point, simply being stationary helps. But to cool even faster hit the power button, wait a few seconds and power back on.
-----------
Automatic shutdown to a certain extent is designed to prevent damage by heat. For example you go about 110% heat if you're powered on you'll receive damage. If you're not, you won't. I believe the range for receiving damage anyway is somewhere around 120% or 130% and up. You'll be receiving damage even while shutdown, but it's higher while powered up.
These numbers were given around Jan/Feb 2013 when the heat system was changed to a new kind of override. At the time they were much higher where it'd be 150% to receive damage regardless. This was reduced because of this exploit. Thus leading to the rough estimation of 120 to 130%.
Interestingly enough.. 6 ER PPCs have a strong risk of killing you. They generate 193.28. (Current Inner Sphere maximum possible threshold with pilot skills but without map interference is 88.56.) Especially when fired after overridden. You continue to receive immense damage from it while shutdown and if you power up you die pretty instantly.
YET... 7 ER PPCs which generate 262.28 heat cannot, ever, kill you even when fired after overriding beyond 100% heat. Instead your CT gets super cherry red at less than one hit point. As if you lose a percentage. I was able to repeat firing between 5 and 6 times and received no extra damage. Was killed by losing my armor though. Note: This only works if you do not manually power up. You will be sitting for nearly 1 minute after each firing.
It's a fun experiment. Try it. I'm serious.

Indeed - shutting down does help you dissipate heat faster, so if you overheat and shutdown you'll take less damage than if you overheat and override, because you'll be overheated for a shorter amount of time.
I generally only use override in a few specific circumstances. If i'm riding the line at about 97% heat threshold, for instance, but I have an enemy who is very close to death, I'll override and continue to chain fire as the damage you receive for being at 100-105% isn't too extreme. Otherwise, I usually only use it if I'm absolutely sure I'm about to die - say if I'm in a Jenner and I get legged near a bunch of enemies, I'll just override and continue to alpha-strike to try to get that one last kill (also, in hopes that I end up killing myself and denying my opponents the kill - I love doing that!)
