"This other gaming review site turned us on to this, then we read some forum posts"
I guess writing for gaming info sites is the bottom rung before you get the promotion to Cat Fancy magazine.

They need more journalist majors to establish a baseline of ethics and research into these articles...

And don't kid yourself. Battletech would *love* to have a fraction of the fanbase that the feline lovers community has.

But after reading a few of the raging comments in the feedback thread I can't help myself but thinking:
When do people finally get that those 500,00 Goldmechs are basicly DONATIONS!?!
No question, PGI has not earned such a DONATION in any way but as for any other F2Pgame such extravagant ingame items for ridicolous high rates are not unusual. Of course there is no real value to these Goldmechs, since they are a token of gratitude for your DONATION. What is the deal with all the fuzz about them? This sense of entitlement is what is killing the game for me.
It is only an OPTION. No need to pay for that Timberwolf, golden or not, just wait until it is available for c-bills just like before. It is free to play. It is just an option! Since when are more possibilities insulting? Kiddies these days...

Pfft... the video card I want costs more than a gold mech. And I'll have to replace it in 2 years as it is.
The gold mech is FOREVER!

However, all of you complaining about the prices on items you don't even have to buy are out of line. It's basically a cash grab so they can continue development, and is NO different than Chris Robert's Star Citizen.
The only exception being they are crowd funding and up front about it while MWO hasn't exactly been a shining pillar of integrity. There are many packages on Star Citizen which blow this out of the water, same as many F2P. Please stop overreacting, there are much more critical issues than $500 mechs... (See the first line in my post).

SC is a different business model. It is not F2P, MW:O is
watch this "F2P the wrong way: Age of Empires"
FWIT, I don't have a problem with the Clan pack prices, I have a problem that they are trotting it out with the game in it's present state AND are boldface soliciting moar money. I could care less about a gold-plated Clan mech - no self-respecting Clan-oriented player should even want one unless it came as a physical model.

And that's the point. They haven't earned it, at all. There's no entitlement here, I don't WANT gold-plated battlemechs. I think that's about the most ridiculous thing ever let alone that they cost $500. If they want "donations" they ought to overhaul their marketplace in general and make it more appealing to potential customers. As it stands now, too much stuff is just too damn expensive. You could even take a real step and do what pretty much every other F2P has done and offer affordable "starter" packs with a Champion mech of some sort, maybe some colors/patterns or other cosmetics and a couple MC on the side.
PGI needs to get it head in the game, just throwing up some ridiculously overpriced blingmechs is NOT going to do it for you. If you have to make a profit off people buying a couple $500 mechs you might just want to really reevaluate where the rest of your cash flow disappeared because as I reckon it, that's not how most games like this work. I mean I bought my storm and saber pack, no big deal... but this Clan announcement and the latest State Of stopped me literally in my tracks from going and buying a Firebrand on sale over the weekend, or anything else, ever. Until PGI puts their content where their mouth is.

Heck, they didn't even have to do it first. They just had to do it right!

Sure, this is going to attract a lot of attention to the brand but, in the realm of game development, where critics tend to be harsher and louder than most other realms, is this really the kind of advertising they will want?

I doubt it. MWO is already being called "the perfect example of what not to do with the F2P model". That is what they are going to be rememebered for. Other F2P games will look at what MWO is doing and do the complete opposite for success.
