Elo ratings have been a thing since the late 30's. Named after a Hungarian-born physicist who invented, it's been used in Chess ladders pretty much forever. It's a great system when you want to rank a competitor versus another competitor. However, it's downright horrible when used the way it's been used by PGI on MWO.

Take League of Legends: Elo hell is oft-debated issue in ranked multiplayer. To quote one LoL forum poster:

"The idea is that your ELO gets so low that you're only paired with terrible people and you'll never win to get your ELO back up to the level you believe you should be at. In many people's opinion, this doesn't exist and it's a convenient excuse to blame others for your lack of skill. Others say it's a real effect, a negative feedback loop."

You better believe the same thing will start happening in MWO. So, what are we to do? If only there were a system that could rank individual players within a team-based matchmaking system... Oh wait! There is a such a system!

Microsoft's TrueSkill ranking system. This system has been in wide use throughout Xbox Live matchmaking, excluding Halo. It is designed from the ground up to be used in individual AND team games.

Yes, but, will it quietly sit there and watch you gently breathing while you're asleep?

I don't get it, if your Elo is low enough that your opponents are worse than you, how are you never winning? Logic error!

Because your team is worse than you as well.

...and so would the other team. If you happen to be stuck in a low Elo bracket, it's probably not because of the teammates you are given.

Yeah, this makes no sense. If your Elo is low, the MM isn't going to team you up with other low-Elo players, it's going to put a low-Elo player on the other team to put you on even footing.

Don't get me wrong, the matchmaker isn't great (and Microsoft's TueSkill could possibly help), but the reasoning behind your argument is flawed.

You can also group with others who have a higher Elo and let them carry you to a new bracket.

As others have said your logic is flawed. If you're at a low Elo then your opponents will be as well so you'll be facing off against others in the "Elo hell" bracket as you described it

Because a good player and a bad player are always at a grave disadvantage against two bad players.
