Regardless there are some likely suspects.
You forgot to armour your legs/rear armour sufficiently ánd you stored ammo in that location.
You forgot to armour your rear side torso armour sufficiently ánd you run an XL engine.
You forgot to armour your rear center torso armour sufficiently ánd you got hit with a high alpha Light's payload.
You were so caught up in battle that you didn't notice you were taking significant damage from an unseen direction already/as well.
With my own JR7-F's 6 ML it usually takes me only 2 or 3 salvoes at the same rear torso location to burn through and destroy the location/possibly kill the mech, and this is versus properly armoured mechs!! If I'm able to time my shots with a teammates hits from the front then the enemy is likely never to notice me.

Take a Cataphract with an XL engine. If you've got lowered back armour, say 15 on the side torsos, with internals (which is half the total external armour of a location so 30 for a Cataphract) that's 45 armour before the torso is completely destroyed and the XL engine with it, which is death.
Any 'mech with 5 ML like a Jenner or a Locust can two shot that XL Cataphract if it gets behind and has a steady aim.

Getting rear-cored by alight mech is one of the pillars of balance that means the game is not simply an arms race to everybody-assault-mech-all-the-time

Where did they hit you at?
What was the cause of death?
What weapon were they using?

Just like I feel every time I face a Catapult head on with my 5x LL Boat Stalker. hitting them twice in that giant cockpit hitzone is so damn easy...
What makes the situation even worse is that a majority of Catapult players (at least the ones that end up in close combat against Assaults in the first place) are newbies that play the Cat because of the looks and because people praise it as an easy to use beginner mech (which it isn't). That means they do not even torso twitch and just stare and fire at you while you two shot them...

Lights can still pack firepower. They are just more frigile. If you are open or having your back turned you get easily 2 shottet by somone who can aim.
Light laser boats deal above 20 damage as low as every second. Shame on you OP that you didnt squash that bug before he got you.
