What is your playstyle? What do you like to do?

Sadly, you will have to figure this out for yourself. The CN9-A(c) is free if you can get five victories in the alloted time, so your cadet bonus can be spent upgrading it. In the bad old days when the trial mechs were stock builds, not champion builds, the best advice would be to buy the trial mech that you felt most comfortable with. Now that they are mostly champion mechs, you cannot buy them with your cadet bonus, but you might be able to buy the stock version of the champion mech and upgrade it.

Your homework is to go to http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab and investigate how expensive the upgrades made to the mechs you are using cost. Buying an XL engine will be nearly as expensive as the mech you are putting it in (unless it is a light. XL's for lights are usually more than the mech in cost) and double heatsinks are a flat 1,500,000 c-bills to upgrade to.

You have to do the homework as you are the one piloting the mech, and if you make the wrong choice, once the cadet bonus is over, it will be a long time collecting the c-bills to buy something else. Anyone here can tell you what worked for them, but only you can figure out what works for you.

If none of the current trial mechs appeal to you, wait for the trial mechs to change and continue looking for what works for you.

You absolutely want to get the free Cent 9A © available this weekend, for starters :P Whether you decide to invest in more Centurons would be an easy decision to make once you get you free Cent 9A.

There are lots of mechs to reccomend as a first buy, more than there used to be. It depends on what weapons you like and how fast you want to go, though. Reccomenations for a fast light harasser are different than for a fast light support or for a ballistic-oriented Heavy.

Generally I start by reccomending the Shadwhawk but it may not be best for your desired playstyle. It is solidly average and it has forgiving hitboxes but it may not offer the exact experience you desire.

Try all trial mechs, and the free Centurion. When you know which weight class you enjoy the most, buy a mech in that class that is tier 1 on this list. If you happen to like it, consider buying two other Centurions to fully unlock that chassis.
