So, we all know it's pretty buggy and inconsistent, has there been any research done on this? Or is it attributed largely to lag?

If you search, the consensus over and over again is that 1. There are hsr issues with all mechs where there is a ping disparity, 2. The spiders hit boxes have already been made larger than the actual mech, 3. Don't trust the on- screen graphics for bit registry, that's client-side and the actual hsr sims take place on the server, and 4. The only reason it seems to be only spiders is what is known as "confirmation bias". What you can expect from this thread is the following:
- several users claiming they took a spider out and tried it, but stopped because it was too easy. (Always unsubstantiated)
- at least 2 different people posting a 6 month old YouTube video "demonstrating" an issue. (And fading quietly when anyone notices the age of the video)
- several well known spider pilots either discussing or providing video proof of how easy it is to die in a spider.
- public refusal to admit that they might actually be missing. (With, obviously, no proof).

Full disclosure. I have 84 mechs, almost all mastered. My favorite is the spider 5d with a tag (wife often drives an Lrm boat) but I honestly think, from testing a 5d with no jj and no ecm as a test... That the deaths knell is more survivable (when on a level playing field, I.e. No jj/no ECM). The jj seem to make all the difference. ECM doesn't hurt ;)
