Though i sold the mech, because i'm not a centurion type of guy. The mechbay is just another large plus. As Radagast said, it's Win - Win.

Don't be surprised to see a lot more of this when the achievement system comes in around the middle of March.

I'm not sure, but this afternoon the servers seemed to have a slight overload problem for a little while, which is suggestive to me. I'll bet that the 5-win Centurion giveaway has pulled in a whole lot of simultaneous players (maybe more than PGI anticipated even).
Since players are content for F2P games, anything that can consistently bring in more people, especially during times when most people are able to participate (say, weekends and such), is pretty much an unmitigated good.
I anticipate that when achievements go live we'll see a bunch of rewards available for various milestones, which could especially help out the new player experience. Monthly or weekly giveaway specials (like our current Centurion deal) could be a great way to keep drawing in players too.

I've never even thought it could be possible from them, althought we're speaking of a (c) mech and not a hero (but the task was very simple so can't complain for basically free stuff).
Later on I'm playing a lot of War Thunder and premium aircraft giveaways for achievements (like do a certain actions and such) are pretty common.
In one of the latest, they gave away an era IV premium plane (there are 5 tiers), so it's like they had a giveaway of a.. Ilya Muromets hero mech for a comparison. Or even better, maybe a Dragon Slayer considering the thing is extremely performing

Further event would benefit more from possibly a tier system of rewards but that would be something for the future, for now a free Champ and a mechbay is great.

Well, in a commercial sense it is nearly the end of the month which is a pretty standard reporting timeline. So any spurt of activity is usually linked to a lower front end of the month so that the end of month 'numbers' are at budget.
Car yards for example often have bigger discounts in the last weeks papers or a sausage sizzle if the month has been slow.
So if you had a commercial background it would make sense to any come to that conclusion
But as for a weekend challenge bringing back 'pissed off' customers, probably not.

If there is some sort of metric to be reached by some audience (whether it be MS or IGP), having a free giveaway on the weekend would boost numbers. It happens a lot for TV networks/shows ("sweeps week/month") and this is a common practice.
I was told about some school system where the city literally PAYS for like a "fun day" for the entire city's school system to "inflate" attendance numbers for every school for some state funding. They also even count students that don't even goto the school as well, just for sole purpose of padding numbers.
Even if there's no obvious outside reasoning for this giveaway, you know exactly what this promotion intends to provide as a result (whether it is a short burst to increasing activity or simply padding numbers for a 3rd party). There may or may not be outside factors, but there's generally a secondary agenda that tends to exist for these things. I don't ponder it too much, but you cannot just say "it doesn't exist", because it's generally not true.

I agree 100% actually, no sarcasm
It's called running a business just like every other single business in existence that runs specials, give aways, pays sales tax for you, throws in free items for a purchase, etc.
Make no mistakes, PGI isn't doing this to be altruistic. They're a business and their ulterior motive is ALWAYS going to be increasing their profit margins. That's what businesses do. That's how they succeed. That's how they market, etc.
What I'm saying is there are a select few who want to turn it into some sort of "doom and gloom" conspiracy theory which is just idiotic in my opinion. That and/or they want to turn it into some sort of devious plot of some kind. It's ridiculous and makes me appreciate the fact that people like that are in the extreme minority here.
