I notice third person is in game. Many games have this forcing everybody to use it or lose the advantages it gives in viewable area. What is better. First or third person?

The 3rd person drone with the bright red light is great. It tells everyone in the map exactly where you are... hope that clears up the confusion.

It is good for peeking around corners or over some objects, but on the down side it will tell anyone looking remotely in that direction where you are.

Never run it. It tells the enemy you are a noob and will draw fire.

1PV : full Hud, full immersion, full Mech-glory
3PV : full overview (even over obstacles) , only crosshairs as HUD (no minimap) , red light of doom (visible over full drawdistance), no immersive Mech glory

The only benefits it has is overlooking some hills that you wouldn't be able to normally, but these benefits are so light in pug play that it doesn't really matter. Besides that it only has drawbacks, namely your arms are locked, you have no radar, and it's harder to aim.

3rd person was implemented to aid new players more quickly in understanding how to pilot a mech; and comes with he above mentioned drawbacks to later encourage them to go 1st person.

THankyou!!! Great to hear. I am a flight simulator fan and a die hard cockpit only player. Third person ruins my immersion and I was hoping that you guys would tell me it gave no advantages.

P.S. Since this is the last post I can make today. I have another question I must post here.
How do I change my in game name? The name I used originally a year ago is an old clan tag. One I had to do written tests to join!! But has since expired in my country.
I would like to add my war of the roses clan tags instead.

Sadly, you can't yet change your in game name, it's locked to your account. The devs have hinted that further development of UI 2.0 may allow such a feature, though. It is possible to have it changed manually by filing a support ticket, but don't do it lightly. Perhaps ask to change to a non-clan-specific name and use that until the ability to change it yourself comes out.

I have used 3rd person sometimes when I'm (say) capping a base and want a better field of view around the resource platform so I know when to bug out. They know I'm there (the base color is changing), so the red-light is less of a giveaway. I could have the mech right up against the platform and not see anything in 1st, but 3rd lets me see a wider view and past that platform.

Other than that, never. When I bug out, I switch to 1st as I start running.

Third is perfect for the first 30 seconds of a match to check out your fancy paint job. That's about it though :(

Don't think this is mentioned but, when i tried 3rd person, my reticle moved randomly. If you're using lasers, its terribad for accuracy.

It's not random, it's actually moving to indicate where you'd hit if you shot, based on what you could see from the cockpit.

It stops 3PV users from exploiting it to hit targets they wouldn't usually be able to see.

You can make a request to support.

But honestly leave the clan tags out of the name. When "Factions and Belonging" comes into play over the month or two the mercenary group ("clan/guild") tags will be attachable to your name.

3rd person is GREAT for telling me which enemies I can solo and which allies not to trust to have my back...

3rd person can be advantageous for the smaller mechs - if you're trying to work your way through tight spaces. Winding through the legs of enemy mechs at high speed can get hard to follow if you are in cockpit.

If it helps, this video has plenty of combat with first and third person switched into throughout it.
