Adding people randomly works -- I mean if you ever see my friends list you can see I just accept anything thrown my way. If you see me on throw me an invite or ask if I have a group going.
Whenever I get bored with the meta, I like joining up with new players 'cause it brings me to a place where people are more creative with their builds. I saw this dude with 2 LB-10xs and 4 AC/2s. O_O; He ripped me apart in seconds. I was like "I WANTS!"

I'm not 100% sure I understand the question, but I'll take a stab at it...
I imagine you not only want to make friends and drop with someone, but also have voice communication with them, and coordinate like you know what you're doing.
(I tried grouping up and coordinating by text chat for a few games, and found no advantage over PUGing.)
If you see people talking in text chat, and someone seems the least bit cool, maybe talk to them and see if they could use another friend. ...Especially if you see an obvious lance of 3 guys with the same faction tag. They've probably got voice comms.
Or, do like Koniving and make friends with someone who had a bad-@$$ mech or score.
I once made friends with some cool people because I was spectating from their mechs, realized 2 of them were identical, and said something about it. After some conversation, they sent me friend invitations, and the address of their TS3 server.
Sometimes people in a guild/clan/club/whatever will post a web site for you to look at. (If they have any guts, they'll do so at the beginning of a match, and not wait to see if they've won.)
Do you have a faction preference? You could go to a faction forum and see who's recruiting.
For example, I'm pretty sure the 1st Rasalhague Dragonregimente is always recruiting, and we have a recruitment thread with contact information including our home page and the address of the TeamSpeak server we share with several FRR guilds.
EDIT: If you don't want to be tied to a single guild, that's quite alright on the FRR server. I play with people besides 1st RDR, and they're OK with it. Likewise, they're OK with random new people showing up. I mean, they posted their server address on the forum for a reason, right?

pw = mechwarrior
Someone will have to confirm because I personally am too shy to use public servers.

Actually if I do add people on my own they're the ones that talk to me during a match. And those that do usually died early on.
But seriously though, I got picked up by Zhizhu because I had a crazy build that was kicking a lot of butt in Caustic Valley during repair and rearm while sporting single heatsinks and not overheating. Go 9 SPL Hunchback! Woot! Chainfire laser-flashy energy machine gun thingy!

I'm comfy in the Zhizhu teamspeak. With new people I either A ) don't click and don't say much or B ) click really well and can't stop talking.
Usually B with mechwarrior people.

Making friends by hopping over to one of the listed teamspeak servers. They all have open rooms for anyone to join. You can make good friends this way. You can easily find a unit to join this way too.
Looking in outreach Merc Corp section of the forum. Reading what the different groups are about and find one that matches your style. If you know a bit of MechWarrior or Battletech and have a specific faction, check out their subforum.
How you have survived over a year of straight PUGing us beyond me. Join up, make friends and have a damn good time while you Mech some noise!
See you on the battlefield. Skill warrior, skill.

When you play this game with a full lance, or even one teammate and start coordinating your approach, tactics and targets, you WILL feel like a mechwarrior. The game will change dramatically for you when you start doing organized drops.
One of my favorite moments is when the lance I was in (4 mech premade all trial dragon(C)) were given a simple order by our drop caller. Move along the edge of the map, he said (it was Frozen City, Night) We gunned it and managed to catch the enemy team in the middle of a giant slug fest with the rest of our PuG team, we dropped speed to 69 Kph, and ran straight through the enemy ranks from the back to the front. We called out targets and shot them only once, before switching to the next one. Managed to drop 4 enemy mechs before any retaliation came our way. The score was now 8-4 in our team's favor because of that reckless run. We cranked the throttle and dispersed, circled around some buildings, then came back into the thick of the fight, full speed doing drive-bys with our lasers and Gauss to clean up the enemy team.
(4 Gauss shots on one body part [especially side torsos of Stalkers] is pretty much instant death. All 4 of us had the Lasers on chain fire, plus a 3rd weapon group that was laser alpha.
When you pull a maneuver like that, you will get a rush like no other.

Yes teamwork is OP. It is also waaaaay funner. get on Teamspeak ASAP and make friends, it may take a bit til you find a group you like and want to join up with. Move around and drop with different people until you find a group that suits you. Comstar is a good place to start, but there are many others. If you see me on the battlefield friend me and I would be glad to drop with you.
Cheers,
Bushrat

You don't need to "make friends" to play together. NGNG and the Comstar NA server offer drop-in-drop-out in addition to space for organized groups. You can jump in with other players on a strictly casual basis without needing to make any comittment (but please realize most units/mercs don't demand any comittment and units/mercs range from wholly casual to seriousbusiness)

You could do what my kid does (I'm not going to let a 9 year old on a TS with strangers). When you see someone in game that does well, send them a friend invite. Then, when you see they are online try to group up with them. I was surprised how many people he got in his friends list, and how many of them would actually group up with him. Just playing with the same people over and over in your lance helps a lot, because you get a feel for what the other players are going to do, and what you should do to aid that.
Your also welcome to try the House Steiner TS. They have open lance channels, in addition to the organized groups that play there: ts1.housesteiner.com no password. Just go to the 'I'm new' or 'waiting to drop' channel.
